Hahaha this has gotta be the biggest screw up I've ever made! I didnt know you could crack micarta by tightening the screws to much...

Note: This set of scales are made by ME and NOT Ka-Bar, I dont want people thinking that the factory scales are trash and as for me, this is the first time I've used removable screws on a handle and I think I might have drilled the holes a little too deep making the micarta kinda weak. Lets hope this doesent happen when I do my BK-7 ;).

Later guys (and girls).

Bummer, Cam. That's too bad.
I saw the first pic and thought "what's wrong with that? - I'd buy 'em."
Thanks for letting us know, though - I'm thinking of trying my own micarta here coming up - I'll definitely pay attention to hole depth now.

Thats too bad man.
But on the bright side, those are some really good looking scales!

Looks like the splits occured at the apex, or corners of the hex head, Hole too snug maybe ?

Yeah, I didnt want to go through all the trouble of making those dumb hex holes so I bought a drillbit that fit the screws very snugly. The scales arent even removable anyway, I epoxied them on and I chose the bolts over pins for aesthetics only. As I said eirlier though, the holes are very deep and the micarta was probably very weak because of that.

Good job otherwise! I wouldn't call that a screw up..I would call it bad luck. OR (wise ass remark is coming up) ....I would call it a "screw down"
Bwaa.Bwaa bwaaaaa.

Look at it this way. It's like the story of Edison and the light bulb. Instead of looking at it as hundreds of fails before it worked, he said he instead he learned hundreds of ways not to do it.

I can't imagine how hard it would be to make hex holes. Especially without CNC equipment.

Looks good Cam and I am glad you got it patched up. Hopefully it holds. Trying to do hex holes by hand was very hard for me. I tried using my dremel and it looked like shit but it worked. I think i might try making some kind of a jig.....we will see. Either way nice looking knife man.

Looks like the epoxy filled it in just fine. I'd say that's some great work on those handles.

When I made some laminate wood handles, I just used a step drill and left the hex holes round. For the average joe, I think that's a decent way to go.

That'd be interesting to see.
