Hi guys. I'm new here and I've been meaning to gift my partner a damascus chef knife. Looked around the internet and came across Hometown Knives. They have a website and an etsy store. The Damascus is from Pakistan and I know about the negative connotation with Damascus from there. But the guy assured me that it was quality and even outlined their whole process.

So anyway, should I still order a custom knife from there? It'll be about ~180 for a nice custom chef knife.

Also, if anyone could point me in the direction of a good bladesmith that could make me this knife that'd be great. I'm desperate I'll even buy the damascus from Alabama Damascus just really need someone reputable if this HTK thing doesn't work out. Thanks!

PS. I'm sorry if this is against the rules or needs to be moved.

Welcome.

Short answer: I wouldn't.

Longer answer: I wouldn't be brimming with confidence that I am getting a custom or actual damascus.

What are you ultimately looking for? A great chef knife? A damascus chef knife? A custom made chef knife? A $180 chef knife?

I'm looking for a damascus chef knife that I can customize a little so it'll be a more special gift that will have my own little touch on it.

For that price range, the "custom" part might be the most challenging.

One of the maker/members here might be an option....

Check the big book store online for damascus chef's knives. They carry a wide variety and most at lower cost. Also check AG Russell's site. He also carries some nice ones.

Yeah it's going to be tough getting a custom in that price range. I'd recommend just getting 1 that's decent quality instead of dropping $180 on a custom piece of pot metal damascus.
Take a look at yaxell, shun, or tojiro, they all make quality damascus chef knives in your price range.

Could not a agree more. Tojiros are nice.

Take a look at some of the Japanese chef knife sites - a lot of Damascus and san mai-style blades in all kinds of shapes and prices.

Gents,
I'd like to chime in and note that HomeTown Knives Reviews speak for themselves. The short and long answers given are very biased and more research needs to be done before make these claims. At HomeTown Knives the Damascus Steel is actually forged and there are no reasons to have any concerns about it being fake. We are also working with a professor from UW Madison - Archeology dept in researching and developing the techniques to replicate the original Damascus from the Indus Valley magnetite. Please do keep in mind that the original Damascus that was forged 1000s of years ago is not what is being forged these days, Now a days all Damascus Steels are laminated steels.
Thanks

So you are Home Town Knives?

$225 for this one. The rest of your description appears accurate. I'd add the word, "Pakistani" to that, though.

Without making any judgement on the quality of HomeTown Knives' work, their site says their Damascus is made from 1095 and 15N20. That's a fairly common recipe for Damascus steels, but I'd also imagine it would be fairly high maintenance as a chef's knife - 1095 is very susceptible to corrosion. You might be safer looking for Damascus made from more corrosion resistant alloys.
