Honing Stones

I understand that Buck has two different kinds of honing stones. One is the hard Arkansas honing stone, and the other one is the Arkansas Wa****a honing stone, which is a mediun grade honing stone. My question is, how can I tell when to use which? Or am I suppose to use the two of them on the same knife every time when I sharpen it? Excuse my ignorance on this matter.

Man! Hard to believe they censored the word 'Wa****a'. It's just a word consists of the letters s, h, i and t. The word itself is, in no way, a foul language. The adminstrator of this forum surely needs to have a spell check software which has a higher Artificial Intelligence. To be honest with you I am surely disappointed on this incident.

The two stones are meant to be used as a system. There are many synthetic varieties and also diamond dust versions that do not require oil to keep the pores of the stone from clogging.

The medium grit by itself is the fastest way to get to a good meat cutting edge. The scratches is leaved on your edge also function as mini-serrations. The finer/harder stone then polishes that edge until it can shave.

I never pursue a shaving edge when I hand sharpen. Just too impatient. For field use the medium grit edge will hold up longer. Depends on your use of the knife.
