It seems I routinely run into issues when trying to buy a sharpener on BF. Am I right to question this?

Day 1
10:51am: List goes up.
1:14pm: buyer 1 (me) offered $500 in PM.
4:20pm: seller told me $600 was bottom like via PM.
7:46pm: buyer 2 said he will take it once the listing was corrected in public posting.
9:25pm: buyer 2 then withdrew from sale in public posting.

Day 2 - no new messages publically posted.
12:17pm: asked seller for assurances on buying it - working on the deal.
12:46pm: frankly said I'll take it so there were zero misunderstandings in PM.
12:56pm: buyer 1 said pm sent in public forum to draw sellers attention.
4:12pm: buyer 2 said pm sent.
5:03pm - 5:11pm: buyer 1 and 2 messaged neither had heard from seller at that point.
8:40pm: seller PMd me and said he had another buyer willing to pay full price.
8:55pm: buyer 2 noted payment sent on public listing.

I can’t speak to what may have happened privately between the seller and Buyer 2, but once a buyer publicly withdraws, forum etiquette generally says they lose their place in line. I stepped in clearly and in good faith. Possibly this was reversed in their PM, but without the seller proving it, forum etiquette was violated. Of course I hope I'm wrong.

I understand a seller wanting full asking price, but ignoring sale order, especially after a withdrawal, doesn’t feel in line with the honor system BladeForums is known for. I also understand it was my mistake to not put I'll take it publicly but in all the things I've bought on here I rarely have issues buying via PM. Unfortunate.

Anything like that and my Spydie senses start to tingle. Once they do, I skate. Helped me dodge lots of bullets so far. I don’t need anything that bad.

With the long silence I kinda got a red flag too. I looked back at his seller history and everything is years old. I still need a good sharpener so I kept at it. You're right though. I done goofed.

It sucks to lose out on something you would like to acquire, but when circumstances highlight a problem, as AntDog notes often a loss is is a win!

Per os tempore it’s an “etiquette” failure because he wanted to save $25 on an item that’s ~$800 new. But os tempore originally low-balled at $500 vs $625 asking price. Maybe the etiquette failure was os tempore trying to save 4% on an item already discounted ~25%. That might just piss off the seller. Is it a matter of honor to offer $500 for an $800 item already discounted to $625?
