What consists of a good hood over forge? Does it need an exhaust fan or does "heat rises" work good enough? Heighth over forge? Diameter or perimeter sizing? Thanks very much.

John, It pretty much depends on what type of forge you have. My first forge was coal. I had built a cone style hood out of sheet metal. Believe it was just over two feet at the bottom but where I screwed was the size of the vent pipe. I had 5" pipe and it should have been double that. It worked fine after the coal coaked up but when it was green I had to leave. With propane the set up I had worked just fine. If you drafting off to the side a fan may be necessarry.

I want to build one too so this thread is interesting. I wonder if a squirel cage fan set up in the pipe and exaust out the wall would get too hot? It would be nice and quiet and move loads of air.
