Man, I love this stuff! I got some from Light My Fire along with a Scout sparker (wish I would have gotten a bigger one... so my wife might get the Scout!)

I messed around with it for a while, and didn't particularly think it was that great, until I read this over on Mike Spinak's site. It was very helpful. Scroll down until the fatwood section.

I did mini-shavings, and then some larger shaved curls and it worked like magic. I got a big bag of this stuff for $2.50 (about 10 good sized sticks). Woot!

Hey Naked...

Cool..
you've found the joys of Fatwood..
One of my Favorite ways to make fire....

I buy mine in 12lb boxes.... :)
It's just a little more than $1.00 per pound that way..
If you look around the BBQ section, you'll find 1.5 lb boxes for a few buck more than what you paid...

I've found the small boxes in the Sporting goods section is the most expensive way to buy it...

Look around you'll get a much better deal..

Hah! Here I thought I got a good deal on a mysterious wonder wood. Thanks for the tip!

BTW, did you get the email I sent you asking about a sheath for my Leatherman Ti?

It's also available in the woods....looks for fallen tree stumps. Or trees that got hit by a lightning strike, a big chance to find it. It's wood that didn't know it was dead, so it kept pumping sap into the wood, so you got sap/resin impregnated wood.

So where do they get it in mass quantities? It seems like it should be more expensive if you have to harvest it in that way. Is there another way to get it or produce it?

This is a swag, but I don't think commercial fatwood is the same thing that we get out of old stumps. I think it is a particular type of pine that has very dense resinous wood. Or they cut the trees at the right time to have all the stumps turn to fatwood, in my experience it is only the stump that makes good lightered wood. Chris

First time I ever read a thread regarding "fatwood" I thought all you guys were full of sh**. After a little investigation I bought some.
It's now in a metal tin in my PSK always.

I wonder how much better "true stump fatwood" is then the stuff I have? I'm amazed by how well this stuff works.

Drop me an email with an addy and I will send you some to try out.

I have never used the commercial stuff too many fatwood stumps around here, there are three that I know of within 100yds from where I am sitting, probably more if I looked hard. Chris

Most commercial fatwood is harvested from farmed pine trees stumps in...Honduras if I am remembering correctly. Info has been posted here before.

I found out about this stuff not too long ago, too. I was expecting to be disappointed just because of all the hype, but it's really that good. It lights right up from just Firesteel sparks. Very impressive, and very reliable. It burns well and for a good amount of time. I'd definitely take firesteel + fatwood over a Bic (not that the Bic still isn't in my pack..).

I've found plenty of fatwood in the joints of large pines.I found a pine about 5in in diameter that was solid fatwood for about 3 feet! Now I've got a pretty good supply for the next year or two.
