Horizontal carry sheaths

Damn Jake. That looks awesome! You going to start a side biz? I will be a customer!

I like horizontal carry in front. In the small of my back I have trouble resheathing the knife. I also like the straps longer to allow for a bit of movement on the belt if needed and snaps to make on and off easier.

Ive done quite a few sheaths for guys lately. Just got a cool HI knife in from Mneedham for some pants. Not really a side biz, as I definatly havent made a heap of dough, but I like the practice, and leatherwork is addicting...Best part is all the cool knives I get to check out.:D

I'm going to have to get a horizontal sheath made. Now the question is by who ?!?!

Bob Dozier makes one of the best horizontal carry kydex sheaths.

They come standard with many of his small knives.

They carry well and are easy to use, and the knife is very secure.

Bob used to make them for any suitable knife,

...but I believe he only makes them for his knives these days.

Here are a couple of mine that I made for my BK2 and 9. I love to carry horizontally.

Nice work!!

I cant believe you carry a BK9 horizontal. Holy cow. I thought the BK2 was heavy horizontal...lol

Thanks!
The 2 and the 9 are pretty close in weight so there really isn't a noticable differance, IMO.

Very cool....I didnt know that. I like the looks of those 9s. Common folk Battle Mistress.:thumbup:

They are very cool, and it's probably my go to knife now, but I like to bring the 2 with me everywhere too so they both get a lot of attention.

I did it a lot with 3-3.5" fixed blades when I carried them regularly, but not in the woods. They interfered with the hipbelts on my packs. Tried wearing one on the hipbelt a few times, but then it just got in the way of the buckle, and adjusting the belt. Horizontal carry was great for EDC, especially with jeans and an untucked shirt. Unobtrusive, fast, and easy to access with either hand using knives with short blades and kydex sheaths. I haven't used a horizontal sheath that was leather, but those all look nice!

I felt the same, and designed a horizontal dangler sheath system. I can wear this as a baldric carry as well, by detaching the sheath from the dangler, and attaching it to the baldric strap.
On the dangler, the knife is readily available, and still out of the way of my pack waist belt. Dwayne at Armoralleather made it for me.

I have a Bark River STS-3 that I love with an awesome horizontal sheath by Volclae. Unfortunately I've hardly ever been able to use it as intended. My hip belt on my pack doesn't allow it. I'd also pay extra for snaps next time so I don't have to remove my belt to get it on and off!

Yours was the inspiration for the one I ordered from Volclae. I saw it on his website and it fit the bill perfectly. It was the last one he made/shipped before getting nailed in the Joplin 'nado. He sold some knives right after that, but that was about a month ago and I haven't seen him around since then. Hope he's OK and is rebuilding his shop. He does fantastic work. (So does MyWifeThinksI'mCrazy by the way. I am seriously thinking about ordering one from him for my BK9.) Anyway, here's my more-or-less copy of your sheath gulliamo, for my BK2:

And yes, it is horizontal or vertical carry, and like gulliamo, if I had it to do over again, I'd order the belt loops with snaps for easy on/off.

Quick question on your sheath retention tab bro...is that shock-cord which holds your strap back on that top BK2 sheath? I've seen Hedgehog sheaths uses something similar and it's a great idea to keep your retention strap from getting cut as you draw your blade. I'm going to try that on a couple sheaths I have...very ingenious idea!

I'm going to rig up a stock ESEE 4 sheath an give it a go horizontal at work. If it works well some propper pants might be in order.

I like horizontal carry, I edc a 7" First Strike in the small of my back with the clip on the opposite side of the back center belt loop and the mouth of the sheath through the belt loop. I find with this setup the knife and sheath are very stable for one handed replacement. I the having the handle stick out because it catches on things, bad people can see it from the front, does not hide well under a shirt or jacket.

As far as wearing it when carrying a large pack, I don't think it would be a good idea. The motions of your elbow when reaching to deploy your knife would put it directly into the side of a pack making it unnatural movement. When carrying a large pack I prefer verticle tip-up on the shoulder strap opposite my strong side for cross draw.

Here is how mine is set up for edc. The sheath is a four way setup that came with the knife.

Sorry I couldn't get pics of it on me myself so I just took my pants off. I have a 33" waist, and it hides nicely and never gets in the way.

I carry my Bravo-1 horizontally in it's kydex in a cross draw position in front and sometimes I'll add my Koster Monster Nessie horizontally in scout carry. I absolutely love horizontal carry for fixed blade knives.
