Does anyone have or know of plans for a horizontal grinder similar to Beaumonts? I would love to buy one of his but just dont have the funds right now.

Thanks

Sean

No plans here.
I searched high and low for different horizontal grinders before I purchased mine from Rob. Nothing comes close to what he offers. I have had mine for a few months now and have used it on every knife I have made since. Well worth the money and if you can afford it get the variable speed. No regrets. It has really speeded up my work.

Thanks, looks like Ill have to try to come up with my own plans. The best thing to do would be just buy one from Rob, but just cant come up with it right now.

When I worked in the meat market, we demoed a horizontal belt grinder that was water cooled. It was probably made by Norton (Bear). It featured interchangeable belts and was fairly compact for a bench unit. After a week we sent it back. We called it the handle maker.

I built mine from a collection of parts laying around and parts I made. The stand is a import grinder stand with a 1/2 aluminum plate. The motor is off my Wilton square wheel after converting to a variable speed 220v. The tracking adjustment was something I had laying around and I turned the wheels on my lathe. The small wheel was off my Wilton.

I use this thing a LOT when building a slipjoint.

I was hoping a folder maker would show me a pic of their grinder! Thats why I want one.
What do you use for tension? Have you got a couple more pics from different angles?
Thanks

Sean

The tracking assembly has the spring for tension. When I get out in the shop in the morning I will take a few more pictures and post them.

I converted my Kalamazoo 1X42 for horizontal grinding not a real solid setup but its good for finish work.

Sean,

My motor runs at 1725 rpm and the drive wheel is 3 inch dia. For the most part the belt speed is good but I would love to slow it down for doing the final belt finish on the insides of the backsprings. I take it down now to a used 320 belt and then end up hand sanding to a used 600, then to the buffer.

I think there is a need for an inexpensive horizontal. I been eyeballing my Delta 1x42 wondering how I could turn it sideways. Somebody should make a set of plans to make one.

Knifekits has a Horizontal Finishing Attachment for the Kalamazoo I purchased one and it works OK the only problem I have is with the tracking you have to turn the bed.
