The only I have seen two options online are KMG and AMK. Any opinion on either? They cost about the same.

TW-90, Reeder, and many others are Horiz/Vert. Even the Bader can be flipped sideways with the hinged base.

I have an Esteem that flips sideways. Unsure if Brett’s still making them. It’s a nice grinder.

I believe Burr king make a dedicated Horizontal as well as Bader. I am positive that KMG, Reeder, Esteem, and most of the rest would make one if you asked, but why wouldn't you want it to do both?

If you want a dedicated horizontal unit, it would be very simple and lower in price to buy a basic grinder chasis of most any type (eg. Reeder) and build your unit horizontal.

BTW, Reeder has it's surface grinder attachment made to be used with the grinder horizontal. It is much easier to use in that orientation.

I have the AMK. It works well but I wish I would have got the variable speed. I'll be upgrading the motor and vfd at some point.

If I ever win the lottery I'll probably get a Hardcore Maximizer. It's about $6k IIRC, which is absolutely insane, but it looks like a well made grinder with lots of adjustability.

Other than that and the Beaumont/AMK grinders, I'm not aware of any other dedicated horizontals that are currently produced. Personally, I'd probably go with the AMK as it seems to offer a few more stock options for tables and accessories.

You can get the Reeder grinder Ultimate package ($3300), the mobile base ($400), and the horizontal table ($275) and set it up as a dedicated horizontal unit. To make it even more versatile, get the surface grinder attachment ($1600)and you can do lots of work on it. $3,975 for everything you need to make knives in any position. $5,575 total with the surface grinder option.

A little, well a lot off topic. These surface grinder attachments have gotten out of control on pricing IMO. Absolutely ridiculous what every company who is building them is charging. I just built one for my Ameribrade, and granted it's very simple and made for doing folder knife parts but I only have about $180 and 8ish hours into mine. I'm getting a +/- of .0005 flat on it. Personally this is the one tool where I would absolutely recommend building your own. For the money Reeder is asking for the SGA alone the OP could buy the dedicated AMK horizontal which is what he wants, a dedicated horizontal, not a tilting unit. And still build a SGA that is perfectly functional if he actually needs one.

Part of me agrees that the pricing is a little out of hand, but to be fair, the linear slide alone is going to cost more than $180 on the majority of the commercially available units. Add in all of the other odds and ends, manufacturing and assembly time, etc... Don't get me wrong, I'd build my own as well before I paid nearly $2k for one, but I'd probably have at least $500 to $600 into it before I was done, just in materials alone, much less machining and assembly.

That said, I have less than $1k into a full size automatic surface grinder, including a belt conversion, which puts the price of these attachments into somewhat of a different perspective... :D

Drew Riley Drew Riley Agree 100%. Like I said, mine is extremely basic. Extremely! Lol. But yea, for less than $200 more I could slap a roller track on mine. That's a mod I actually plan to make but for now I'm up and running and able to make parts flat pretty quickly and that's really all that matters. If I recall correctly Red Beard Ops homebuilt SGA build was in the $400 - $600 range and his does probably everything one of these $1700 brand name units would do.

I'm just a hobbist knife maker. I have a top of the line knife belt grinder with multiple attachments that I love. With that said I think I'd rather have several good knife grinders set up to do specific things than just one grinder that I have to constantly change just for efficiency!

To make this as a business I would thing like always time is money. If I need to constantly to change my tooling I'm loosing money. JMHO

Thank you guys I wanted to make sure I was not missing anything. I have a good grinder now that does flip horizontal but I find setting it up to be usable and square in horizontal format is quite time consuming. I’m gonna try to rig something up at will make it a little bit easier. Just don’t have the room for another grinder nor $2000.

I have an Ameribrade that tilts. I bought another work rest for my grinder just for using in the horizontal position. Also when I adjust my combo platen to focus on the 2" contact wheel I made a workrest out of micarta that I simply clamp onto my horizontal workrest when in use. Just an idea that may work for your application. YMMV.
