Horizontal grinders

I don't see where you are based, but you could contact these guys in Poland (http://szlifierkitasmowe.com/index.php?id_lang=1), they would probably build a dedicated horizontal grinder if asked (my H-V grinder with all attachments, vfd and 2,2kw motor costed 1000 euro). I can't say anything about longivity but it tracks good and eats steel for real.

I have an Ameribrade that tilts. I bought another work rest for my grinder just for using in the horizontal position. Also when I adjust my combo platen to focus on the 2" contact wheel I made a workrest out of micarta that I simply clamp onto my horizontal workrest when in use. Just an idea that may work for your application. YMMV.
Yeah I think this will be my plan. the horizontal grinders available do not look very attractive

I'm about to buy a grinder, and I'm not sure I want to spend extra for the tilting base. Is it worth it?
Here's the one I've settled on

that looks mighty expensive for something that doesn’t come with a motor or drive.

I would absolutely spend the money on tilting capability, or engineer it yourself. For me it’s one of the top 2 most important features that I use in my shop (VFD being the other).

I have a fixed base 2x72, so I built a workbench that allowed me to flip it horizontal when I need to.

huh, interesting. Tilting bench, eh? That's a pretty cool idea

thanks very much for your opinion, I appreciate it- especially because it confirms my bias ;)

as for the dollar value, this is Canadian dollars which are at around 30% so in USD it's about $1600

It's a rip off of the TW 90 without the features of flipping and the TW tracking, plus a lot less mass and rigidity; for not much less $.

I understand the CD dollar
but a motor and vfd will cost you seven or eight hundred more.
don't go shitty ebay chinese VFD, go KBAC27D 9520

Look at the North????? with the flipper base

If you can get parts cnc plasma cut and run a drill press, look at the free Saybar plans

2 for 2 recommend the tilting base. Thanks for the feedback
