horizontal sheaths

Nice pic Dave! That may be the first time I've seen a guy riding a saddle bronc with a belt knife.

OP, Scout Carry (horizontal, small of back) is very good for larger, heavy knives like a Tops Tracker. I agree that your fears of the knife "slicing your guts" or "stabbing you to death" maybe a tad overboard:)

Riding with my BK15 vertically in a rather high-ride leather sheath still has the handle poking my elbow, ribs, or somewheres on my body while the tip of the sheath often hits the cantle. The sheath I've been using does take a slight diagonal cant if I give it a push against the belt loop, but I would prefer a nice horizontal leather sheath for the small of my back or my left hip in a cross draw fashion. I'd love a flap-top similar to Buck's design.

Dave Ferry, you have anything in that vein?

Just an FYI on this thread. It started in General Discussion, which is the reason for some new names up there.

Kind of a shocker to see such responses here eh? That is why I am so proud of this place. :)

There are a few reasons why I don't poke around General much anymore. I find the smaller, more focused forums to have a higher standard of what's expected from the membership. :)

Thanks jdk1. A bucking horse or jumping a creek horseback is something I keep in mind when doing my sheaths. I've seen folks get into a bronc ride (not so much on purpose) and watched their knife go sailing across the pasture. That was before I was making sheaths but its something I always remember. Every sheath I make is turned upside down with the knife in it and shaken (not stirred, sorry bad 007 pun) vigoursly to ensure retention is right.

Zieg I do these for sob type wear that doesn't interfere with the cantle:

Nothing with a flap though. I know what you are talking about. In the past I've used holsters and sheaths that would hit the cantle. Part of the driving force behind alot of my designs.

OK, then. Looks like I'll have to send you my BK-15 for fitting to a small of back design sheath, Dave. Love your work!

For convienience and ease of movement a bushcraft pouch on a dangler has been great for me. That was until I tried to get the knife out with one hand in the garden the other day. Now I am very much thinking about a scout carry style for my next project
