Horrible Tragedy

I met Thomas Haas (Hoss) for the first time in Vegas Thursday morning. This was his first knife show. Late Friday night my wife called me and told me to sit down. Her words were "Tom died". We talked for a few minutes and I called Thomas's wife. She told me that Thomas had had a fairly serious car accident recently and his Doctor had prescribed some pain pills.

Thomas had originally planned to have dinner with his Mother Thursday night, but did not show up. His Mother knew that he was exhausted and just figured he had went to bed. Friday morning she called his room a couple of times and then she asked security to check on him. When security went to his room, they found him dead. Apparently the combination of the pain pills and some alcohol caused his heart to stop.

This really hit me very hard. Thomas and I spent many hours on the phone and many, many emails. He was way more than just a good customer, he was a great friend. We discussed more about life, family, and raising his children (three young sons), than we ever talked about knives.

He will be greatly missed. If you would like to send his wife Judina <sp.> condolences, here is the address.

Very sad. My condolences. AT, I copied your message to USN since he is also a member there.

Another good man gone, sorry to hear of his passing.

Prayers for his family are on the way.

A.T. thanks for letting us know. That is so sad. :(
We've definitely lost another great one.

wow, thats awful, will certainly keep his family in prayer. This is a short life, its hard for us to remember this sometimes, but even when we do, certainly makes it no easier. certainly my thoughts and prayer are with his family.

May the Lord be with them and comfort them in this tragic time.

I never got to meet him in person, but from his posts and occasional emails it is obvious that Kit is right. AT I am very sorry for the loss of your friend. I know you lost a good one.

It is always a terrible tragedy to lose someone in the prime of their life and especially to the manner in which Thomas lost his life. My prayers are definately with the family.

:(

I never got the chance to meet him, but I did talk to him many times via email and phone. :(

Terrrible News,
I never met him, but from correspondence with him I considered him a good friend. One of the forum members who has been around for years, and a truly good guy.
Condolences to and prayers for his family.

Very tragic news.

I never met Hoss but did exchange E-mails quite a few times with him. Great guy.

Yup, very very tragic event..........

I met him through a trade deal on forums about a year ago, and immediately struck up a friendship. Even after the deal was completed we kept in touch off, and on but had been a month or so since checking in with each other.
He alwasy talked about hooking up at a knife show to meet the people he talked to here on the forums, and finally got his wish thank goodness before this awful tragedy.
A great person with a very large kind heart, and a nicer man I have never met.
My condolences to his great family who he adored.

Tom (Hoss) was a good friend.

We talked frequently on the phone...............he visited me every time he came to Oahu.

He had started making knives and has been an avid collector of a lot of the guys on here for many, many years. He always brought some of his new stuff to show me.

I am still in shock......................and sick..........

Vegas was his FIRST knife show ever............he was as excited as a kid at Christmas.

Please pray for his wife and three boys and his mom.............we cant fathom the depth of this great loss.

Sincerely, Tom Mayo

Tom,

Loosing a friend like that is one of the toughest things to go through.

Like I said I never met Hoss in person, but from a few emails and his posts here it was not hard to tell the type of person he was.

I hope the sorrow you and A.T. must be feeling is eventually replace with the knowledge that you were blessed for him to have been in your lives as much as he was.

Cougar and I talked this over after an email from Tom. Hoss touched a lot of folks here. So we decided to stick the thread for a while. I am sure his wife would like to hear from us.

This is terrible news. Tom just sold me a knife to raise funds for the trip, he was really looking forward to the show. He was one of the old-timers here and always a fun presence on the forum. My condolences to his family and friends, may he Rest In Peace.

This is truly sad news. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved him.

Hi All-

This is a very sad situation for everyone involved. Needless to say, alcohol and pills never mix. Condolences to all family and friends on this terrible news.
