What do you guys recommend for a finish on horse mat handles? Have it sanded down to 220, but don't know if it needs a coat of something.

220 grit should be ample fine enough for a good finish on the stuff. I can't imagine what sort of coating you could need, or that you'd get to stick well for that matter.
A 220 grit finish will leave the handle with a good 'grippy' feel. I'm assuming that you want 'grippy' or you'd have used some other handle material ?

Some of the ones I've done have only been taken to 120 grit with the belt running at a medium speed and that works well. Going finer than 220 would almost seem a waste of time and effort. I doub't the look of it will improve with finer grits.

Just get it to 180 or 220 and call it good. Anymore sanding is just a waste of time as Longstrider mentioned. No sealer or anything needed.

Maybe one of those foamy spray-on products that makes tires glisten. :)

Seriously though, 150 grit is what I finish it to.
