Hi,
I am Planning a knife for a Neice who is going to Vet school. She lives on a Youth horse Ranch that her family runs in Qubec Canada. To add a bit of fun I took an old horse shoes from their Garage. I am thinking of forging a guard for her knife. I would like to know what type of metal it might be?
Got any Ideas????????
Any thing to watch out for???
Thanks:)

My experience has been that they're mild steel. Don't know for sure what alloy, but its nothing exotic. It should work pretty easily.

The metal is whatever was cheap when the place making the shoe bought steel. It should be suitable for a guard. It may be red hard or hot short. And they may all be different.

Dave,
If you really want to know what it is I would be willing to have it tested for you.
Matt
