I just got some horse stall mat scales and was wondering if any of you guys had any experience grinding, installing and finishing them?

Joe, a medium grinding wheel or 60 grit belt works well. I actually applied a set with Gorilla glue. It may not be optimum, but they won't budge. Stainless tubes work well. I am glad to hear you got them, I was beginning to wonder.

They like a Super Glue type glue for attaching them to the tang(along with pin, tubes, bolts). I tried my 1st set using 2 Ton epoxy and they pulled right off. I used Super Glue to reattach the scales and they are still holding after heavy use and almost two years now. I shaped my handles with a new 36 grit belt and a rasp. Not too much you can do to make em pretty though as the material just doesn't respond well to much finer grits. Work slow on the grinder with low pressure. Oh and ventilation and a respirator are mandatory........think burning tire smell :)

Can't smell any worse than Micarta. Stag smells like Chanel #5 to me compared to that stuff:eek: I am going to be using the sets of scales that I bought for my JS test knives.

Joe, I grind them with a 36 or 60 grit belt slowly, and then clean up with a 120. It leaves a rough finish but very grippy. I use LOCTITE super glue and spread a thin coat on the scales, then clamp up. No problems and on a test piece, I pull the rubber apart before the bond breaks.
Good Luck
