I was thinking of changing out some of my scales to rubber scales. I have read that people like Winkler use horse stall mats. Do any of you know what brand is good for this and do you know of any good tutorials?

thanks

You should look around because some of the mats are nicer looking than others. The basic horse stall mat has a somewhat coarse texture and white flecks. You can actually get better quality stuff either all black or with flecks of the color of your choice on th internet. A lot of that stuff is sold a mats for the gym, weight room and such.

I believe some are waterproof and others will absorb fluids.
You may want to double check on that to be sure.

I was using some horse stall mat, but then went to the rubber and hose supply place and bought nice neoprene sheets instead. They had it in several useful thicknesses and was cheap by the square foot. They also had several other nice rubber materials!

Thanks for all the responses and info! I found a place that sells stall mats nearby me and I'll also look into neoprene sheets and such!
If anyone has any other suggestions that would be good.
How do you guys attach them? Epoxy?

Just a suggestion but have you thought about using Terro-Tuff? After several years of using stall matts Dan Keffeler told me that he was switching to Terro-Tuff because it adhered better and lasted longer than stall matts. He knows a thing or two about that kind of stuff. ;) It also comes in lots of cool colors.

Darien, I know that Tero-Tuff is polyester based, but is is soft?

Terro-tuff is good for tactical and bush handles, but is not the same as rubber.
Consider it a slightly softer and grippier Micarta. It is similar to what many people get when they make home made MyCarta.

What I use is 3/8" neoprene sheets. Most of the knife suppliers carry it. You can get sheets and sometimes in blocks. A good resin, like G-flex, will adhere the neoprene well. Dye the resin black and the seam is invisible. I have used horse stall matting, but it is pretty ugly stuff. The only place I can see horse stall mat being the perfect material is on chopper, machete, or hatchet handles.

Look up rubber cutting boards from places like Sail Rite. Much better than the HSM
