Horseman vs Commander

I'm looking to get an Emerson as a primary firearm retention option (off side carry in right pocket), I've had relatively extensive training in Kali with knives so I'd feel comfortable with carrying one for this purpose.

If any of you guys have any experience with any martial arts that involve bladed weapons or just a suggestion in general, which would you recommend?

The blade would also be used for EDC, feel free to suggest any other EKI knives that would be well suited to this role (<3.5" blades only please)

I don't have experience with any of that, but my only recommendation to you is if you choose horseman, just go with the full size 8. The horseman handle is just a little to small.. Just my opinion though.

Also, just a general suggestion, look at the patriot. It's a Bowie style tip with a slight recurve :)

This. ^
I like the Commander as it's a multi folder. Get the serrations too.

Go with the combo edge commander. That is also the model that Mr. Emerson carries .

Horseman is a little small. I'd go with a combo Commander. Satin blade if you dislike scratches, black if you don't care.

Multi folder... is a folder that can handle most situations very well, utility, emergency and SD.
The Commander is big but not too big for EDC, imo.

To stay under your 3.5" limit you would have to get a mini commander. I would prefer that to a horseman, as others have said the handle seems too small. The commander and mini commander are awesome knives.

Gotta agree with Officer's Match about the Journeyman. I have seen conflicting info on the blade length but I have measured 2 of them myself and the actual blade length is 3.6" so it is very close to your requirement. The handle is much like the Commander but I like the blade better for most uses. I have my black Journeyman in my pocket as I type this and it is probably my second most carried knife only behind my 7A, which is another awesome knife with a blade under 3.5"

I apologize, I should have specified that <3.5" blades mean't smaller than 3.5in. Also, how is the ease of sharpening the Commander with a Sharpmaker? Stropping that recurve?

That being said, anyone got a combo edge Mini-Commander they're wanting to get rid of (stand-offs)? :D

I had both and liked them but think if get another Emerson it's going to be a 12, 13, or Patriot. Honestly couldn't decide which one is better between the 8 and Commander. Commander does have that wicked blade shape going for it though witch i like. Though my sharpening skills lack on that much recurve, Can get sharp just not perfect. I want a 13 or patriot.
