I have just startedmaking knives and so far, they are all S30V or 20CV. I would like to make some hunting and skinning knives next out of A2 or some other high carbon steel and I would like them to be hot blued. I asked a friend who has a gun shop and he said most people have gotten out of blueing because of all the EPA and OSHA hassle. Does anyone have a good source for blueing? Also, any recommendations for steel types - I only do stock removal, no forging.

Where are you located? My 3 local gunsmiths all do hot blueing and I'm in California, a state known for difficult epa regs.

One of the most common blueing salts is oxynate #7 and it gives a deep rich blue
black color. Your buddy is right, the stuff is real TOXIC. Of the few knives and guns
I've blued I was more than happy with the results. Now I don't even want it around.

I am in Washington state. Who are your local gunsmiths and what are their phone numbers? I'll contact them. Thanks, Xander.

You may have an easier time with Mel Doyle in Plummer Idaho, he does excellnt work with quick turn around times. Two of my local smiths have ridiculously long wait times (one had a pistol of mine for over a year) the other guy does fantastic work, Matt Huston of Hustons custom guns. I don't have a card on me right now, but you can google it.

Send me an email or PM. I have a source with about 2 week turn around for hot blueing.

Sorry - can't seem to figure out how to PM or email thru BladeForums. I am mostly computer illiterate. Please e-mail me your e-mail address at tdbarney@comcast.net. Thanks.
