Hot day for a walk

Today was hot, I mean, holy cow hot. I had to strip down to my little polyester under layer while walking. I went out to my usual haunt of Ojibway prairie. The dogs were complaining about not enough walk time so they had to get their dirt time in.

Today the JK kephart, sporting its new Normark OST-pants, came along for the ride.

Lots of great tinder to be had today. I kept stuffing my pockets full of the stuff.

I thought this would be a new one to try out. It was in high abundance along the trail side.

Unfortunately that stuff didn't turn out really very good for taking a spark. The milkweed and phragmites worked very well.

Also snagged a bit of punk wood from this old stump.

Some more of the trailside.

Here is that downed cottonwood I talked about a few weeks okay. Today, I decided to havest a couple of limbs for future bow drill. When I cut into it, it was still pretty wet in the wood, so I'm going to let these harvested pieces dry out for a while. I know that this cottonwood went down sometime in late summer as the last time I came buy, it was down but its leaves were still green. I want to see how long it takes for the branches to dry out and be suitable for bow drill as is, so I'll keep returning to this guy over the winter.

Hot? In Canada in November?? It was a horrible 70 degrees here, we need some cold....

Nice pics, that place looks like a tinderbox.

Check out the rack on this buck! Well, its hard to check out. I was holding onto the dogs by the leash and trying to take a shot. I like the dogs, but at times like this I really regret having them with me. They tend to scare and chase away wildlife and don't really give you an opportunity to track things. There was a doe with the guy. Wish I could have gotten better shots. He was nice!

I returned home and unloaded my pockets.

Some grubs in the goldenrod gulls. Normark (Eric) chars the split open gulls in a tin just like tin cloth and uses it to hold a spark like a coal extender. I thought that was pretty cool!

Hope you enjoyed the thread!

Nice knife, nice pics, nice weather, Ken. I don't know how hot it was there today, but here in San Diego, CA, it only got up to 68. That's kind of backwards, temperature wise, I think.

Looks like a great hike:thumbup: I really like the Kephart/kydex kombo:foot::p:thumbup:

Great pics Ken, Like you we had a above normall for temps too.
Love the deer pics. This is a great time of year for tinder gathering since so many plants have gone to seed.

Excellent photos as always Ken, looks like a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Great pics. Those golden rod grubs have been my favorite ice fishing bait since I was able to fish.

I did the same thing today Ken. Weather was the same (who would have guessed right). I also ended up in only my baselayer.

I saved my dad from an afternoon of shopping for curtain rods with my mother, and we took my dog out to a rec area near Mt Clemens. Probably did 6-7 miles, stopped about halfway through for a cold one from the daypack.

My camera is currently out of commission though.

Packed my Mora2k in it's new Kiah's kydex. Also encountered the same kind of tinder, tried some of it, showed my dad how to use a firesteel. Great day for a walk, but I'm worried my dog might be sore for a while (he got really tired).

And whoa

I'd LOVE to see something like this on Sunday morning. That's a nice mature rack.

Great photos.
It was warm here today as well.
The biggest problem was the #@$%$ mosquitoes.

KGD --

Where did you get the sheath for the Kephart? I'd like to do something like that for mine.

Nice pictures, k.

Also, don't forget to harvest some of the Milkweed stalks for cordage.

Doc

Whats the process Doc?

Do you remove the fibres from the stem like in your past thread. Do you need to boil or wet the stem first? Seeing as we have plenty of milkweed, this seems like a good exercise to do.
