Hot day for a walk

Whats the process Doc?

Do you remove the fibres from the stem like in your past thread. Do you need to boil or wet the stem first? Seeing as we have plenty of milkweed, this seems like a good exercise to do.

No, you don't wet or steam them. I'll see if I can grab a few stalks in the next couple of days and do a pictorial.

Those are some great pics. That sheath for your kepart looks great. The rack on that deer was good size.:D

Well kgd,

I left work early today, and thought I would grab a couple of Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) stalks so I could do a pictorial of cordage processing for you. I went a few miles but did not see one, believe it or not, not even a stunted growth one.

There were tons of Goldenrod, Great Ragweed, Burdock, Phragmites, some Cattail, etc., BUT NOT ONE DAMN MILKWEED!

I just talked to my wife on the phone (she is babysitting my granddaughters who live in the country). She said there's Milkweed in their yard so she is going to grab me a few by the weekend. I could find some, but I have to work the rest of the week. :(

BTW, I ran into a guy and his wife and he told me the salmon have been running this week, up the same creek that you checked out on my birthday - a little further north, towards Lake Ontario, though.

I didn't see any live ones (water's quite low at the moment) but I did see a dead one. Looks like he's been gone for a few days.

Must be Wood Nettle (Laportea canadensis) harvesting time because it typically coincides with the salmon run.

And since it's better not to hike alone, I took my buddy, B-1 with me. :D

(That should fulfill my knife porn requirement :) )

In places, the pictures don't look like a natural progression (hey, it's hard to do this with one person), it's because I took quite a few pictures and selected the clearest ones.
