The reporter from the newspaper and a photographer came today and spent two hours interviewing me .They photographed some of my knives. Then we went to the smithy and they took some more photos. Sher asked how long it took to forge a sword. I told her that some took one hour and some took 50 hours. To demonstrate, I took a bar of Aldo's new 1084FG ( I really like this stuff) , cut off about 20",and forged out a 24" cutlass in about 20 minutes. They got some great photos of the hot steel being worked. I'm going to clean it up, do the HT with clay to get a hamon, and when it is done give it to the reporter. That isn't as big a gift as it sounds- She got so excited looking over the knives that she ordered about $1000 in knives for Christmas presents. A professional sushi knife for her father-in-law (he cooks a lot), a folder for her dad, a high end fillet knife for her husband, and a superb santoku for herself.
The photographer asked where it would be easiest to try and photograph some knives. I took out my folding light box, and presto....instant knife photo staging. He was impressed.
Beginning to end, a nice afternoon.
I'll let you know how the article comes out.
Oh, and to top it off she was really cute ( that never hurts).
