I'm currently using ATS-34 hot rolled bar stock from Koval. I've noticed that Admiral Steel offers there bar stock cold rolled in the sizes I want. What is the difference between hot and cold rolled. Admiral's prices are cheaper.
I don't have much experience with ATS 34 , but I'll try to help. Generally cold rolled is formed to tight tolerances +- about .001 of an inch while hot rolled is usually heat treated in some way and does not have tight tolerances. Steel prices will vary depending were you buy it and Admiral is a good source.
Thanks a lot, Scott. I was just wandering if for some reason cold rolled was undesirable for knifemaking. Admiral's prices for the cold rolled is lower than the hot rolled stuff from Koval. I guess I'll order some stock form Admiral.
cold rolled is just that rolled at room temp on rolling mills that can make 500-1500 tons of force.
In thin pieces it will warp badly when ground or cut by a miller.
By thin I mean 3" or less thick.
I worked for a co that makes rolling mills and worked with CR alot from 1/8" to 12" thick.
Use hot rolled.

Whooooo!! You just saved me some money and heartache, Ed!!
I had my Admiral order written and ready to mail on some cold-rolled (like AKY, the price was appealing) for a tactical design I had drawn up. Thanks for throwin' me a lifesaver!!
But, what about using it in damascas?? Would the problem be resolved as it is heated, folded, and hammered, or will it remain?? I would assume that it is resolved but my newbie brain wants to be sure.
I to worked for a company that made Rolling Mills. It was Morgan Construction in Worcester MA. Did You by chance work for them or another company if you don't mind me asking.
