As promised, here are a few shots of some brass Schrade stamps. Although some were possibly used for embossing boxes, most were for hot or cold stamping knife handles and sheaths. The really long ones were likely used on melon testers. Keep in mind that these stamps are actually made backwards, so in order for you to more easily read what they say, I've flipped the photos.

A couple of points of interest;

There's an odd chainmail looking stamp in the third photo down on the left. This was actually a pattern stamped into a celluloid handled knife, I think it was a Cut. Co lobster, but I'm not sure. Someone here possibly has one though. I had always wondered how they'd gotten that pattern on there, now we know!

Ulster made a line of Stiletto knives, I think possibly in the 1960's, based on the standard Ulster patterns, hence the Stiletto stamp in the same photo.

The "Genuine Horse Hide" stamp was a sheath stamp, used on the back.

If you have any questions, fire away!

Hey Eric You can brand us all .
Horse hide and fertilizer would probably suit me .

And the long horn and hygrades . and

They would be nice on some leather work . Top collection mate .

That is quite a collection. From the stamps you can see all the different companies that the knives were made for. Thanks for sharing.

Great pictures Eric.

A lot of nostalgia in those pictures! In the bottom photo, are some of these really small, like shield stamp small? These are not ink stamps for boxes. What are the holes in the die for? I see several that are the same pattern as blade etches, for example, the TRADE Everlasting Sharp MARK stamp. I recognize that one from one of my old 804's with that etched onto the bevel of a sabre clip.

I love the Diamond Edge Cattle Knife stamp.

Any idea what the mouse was used for?

just for fun why not show the stamps as they truly are so people can see what upside down and backward looks like.

Sure Del, there's a knife in the way but you should be able to make 'em out. I'll see if I can snag a few more pics tomorrow, gotta head off to work now. Hal, I'll catch those questions later as well.

Hal,

Ok, yes the small ones are the size of a shield, some would be a quite small shield, but they're definitely not shield stamps. Brass is too soft and would turn to mush under the pressure. The shields were actually made off premises in Providence, RI.

The holes are for attaching the die to a jig that was mounted in the press. Those dies are quite thin, while the ones without holes are actually quite thick. I'll try to take some side-on shots tomorrow. BTW the presses were similar in size to a good size drill press, only with more wires.

Definitely couldn't do an etch with these either, those were done "photographically". I'm not positive where that "Everlastingly Sharp" one was used, although I've got a pretty good suspicion it's from the big 275 clasp used for the Walden Fire Dept. Commemorative. The back of that particular knife was stamped with three different trademarks:

I have NO idea where the mouse came from :D

Eric

PS- Now that I compare the stamp with the knife image, I do see some discrepancies, so it may not be the one used on the knife. I'm thinking the stamp was a lot earlier.

Eric, the dies may serve as 'evidence' for Schrade manufacture of a knife that one is unsure of. excellent resource. Thank You.
Now, to try and collect a corresponding knife for each die, ---, well, it will take me awhile, eh.

Any idea what the mouse was used for?[/QUOTE]

"Johnny Muskrat" logo confirmed in my copy of the Sears Fall/Winter 1949-50 catalog as a handle hotstamp on ivory plastic #9545 3-1/2" 2 blade muskrat trapper knife. I'll see if I can get a scan up sometime today.

Here are some products of the "Say It With Flowers" hot stamp!
Can't wait to see that muskrat/mouse logo, Codger!
