I didn't forget it, coming from the area I'm in its not something most people are even aware of, I've always considered it to be a sweet spot option available to less people or maybe less acceptable/popular kinda like voodoo magic to most people.

Most people are aware of the ones I've listed. I did consider it but I didn't think it was as well known, it is a viable option for some.

Passive heat is what I want, but a standard electric tank is what I have. Gas is a great idea if you have a tank that only needs a little use at a time, since the steady heat of the pilot light is enough to get it up to temp given enough time, and good insulation. Right now the house I'm in isn't very efficient, but it is amazing how good newer systems can be, and by combing systems, there is a lot of energy to be saved.

Solar collectors can really heat up the water in the pipes. They are great for heating stuff, not so great at making electricity yet in my opinion.

I also wonder with the wear on the layer's of our atmosphere (climate change symptoms or whatever you call them), is it such a wise idea to reflect that bad UV light that got in, back up on to the wrong side of the atmosphere? I am not sold on the safety of international and widespread use of solar panels yet. I think there may be some overlooked trouble with the idea.

When I say solar I mean to heat water for hot water, heat, pools and what not electricity, I'm with you on that subject Ron...

I've used gas water heaters for the last 30 years, I love them. Cheap, reliable, and I have hot water when the power is out.

instantaneous gas. about the size of a PC tower.sits outside the kitchen window .we have a gas main here so supply is right-no cylinders to mess about with. gives hot water to both showers and kitchen taps without the old "yaaah the waters gone cold who's running the taps?". Better than the old electric off peak storage tank.

Don't know what "has" Water Heater is but I have a "Gas" Water Heater & it is always hot & ready to go whether it is to wash clothes or do the Dishes or take a shower it is "Hot"..!!!

Electric on demand types can be reasonable if the incoming water is near 70 F.As the incoming water gets colder costs go way up. BTW the idea of tankless has been around since the 1930s at least !

Won't help me, my water comes from a 400'+ deep well, it comes out at 53°...

I have a natural gas water heater. The problem we have is that we don't use much hot water in terms of volume and as a result, we will frequently run low on hot water until it heats up again. I like my hot water... hot enough to "take your skin off", but it doesn't work out that way in practice.

What can go wrong with a gas hot water heater?

The tanks rust out and leak. They usually leak just a little bit but sometimes they leak a lot or burst and dump the water out fast.

The thermostats can go bad and not maintain the temperatures very well.

Just had a new 40 gal State electric water heater installed this year. It's in the crawl space, so if it starts leaking, no big deal, but it was a real pain for the guy to get the old one out and the new one in. Had to remove the molding around the access door (it's inside). I was shocked at how much they cost now. I have an entry on my calendar to bleed it every 12 months, which is something I didn't do on the old one. I want this one to last as long as possible, because who knows how much they will cost in another 8 years.

Isn't this true with electric water heaters also? Metal + water = rust. The thermostat issue is one that I don't understand. I can set the thermostat at a middle high level and check it a week later and it has moved lower. Don't know what going on with that??

Our building has an OLD copper lined gas water heater. Might be the original.

Only thing we have to do to it is replace the thermocouples when they go bad. I keep a couple on hand since they're so easy to replace.

I have had a solar water heater for over twenty years. It has an electric booster but have never needed it. Admittedly i live in a mild climate but do not pay anything for water heating.
