With the heat wave we have here in SO CALI. I started to get my hot weater gear ready for the hikes and motorcycle rides. I tried those bandanas that you dip in water and wrap them around your neck. I found that they work great and realy cool you off. If the air is dry and you have a slight breeze it feels as if you have ice wraped around your neck. If you take it off and swing it in the air over your head for a min. You can put it on top of your head under a hat to realy feel the body cools down. You can also find some that are like a sleeveless jackets that can cool your all body. That works realy good for motorcycle riders to keep you cool. A cool head helps you think better which makes it safer. Last year on a long hike with a group, We had a girl lost all strengh. Before anything else happened i told her to wrap the bandana around her neck. 20 min later she felt perfect and finished the hike with out any problems. After using the bandana and the jacket i also got a skull cap that i didnt try yet which had the crystals as well. I look at the gear as a must for hot weather hikes.

Agreed. It's not unusual to see temps in the high 90s/low 100s here in the summer too, and keeping your head cool really helps a lot.

I bought a pith helmet last year. You basically do the same thing with it - soak it til it's dripping and then put it on. I know it's become a cliche, but it really does work.

It's been brutal the past couple of days! Just a little prequel to what we'll have in another month or so. I had one of those neck cooling things, I need to look for it. I like the shemagh I have too for soaking in water then draping around my neck on hikes. I also recently got a Filson bush hat that really keeps the sun off, I like it.

I use these and they're great:

I have never really suffered any ill effect from hot weather (as long as i am hydrated) The heat itself dosent get to me that much, and it isnt uncommon to get up to 115 or so here in august and july. but ill try that bandana thing to see what i am missing. good tip

I know it can look cliche, but I believe that the cheap straw cowboy hat I bought helped me stay cool in 100+ temperature in the South Dakota Badlands.

PB Wilson its not a cliche the straw hat does help to keep you cool. Now get a small towel get it wet and put it under the straw hat and you would see how much cooler you would feel. Lets not forget that we lose most of our heat from our head and neck.

I have one of those buffs and love it, they work GREAT in cold weather too. I have been using those neck bandannas at work for years, it is the only way to go if you are working in the heat.
