whats the longest time in one session have you spent in the shop?I work till 5 pm, then get my son, cook clean give him a bath, my wife helps, and then put him to sleep. after 10pm is the only time during the week i have in the shop. I cant use loud machines or be too loud. then the weekend comes--yard work, house work, helping friends and when i go to the shop , my wife complains I dont have time with her. I end up rushing through my drilling and sanding and any other loud tasks. Man i wish i could spend atleast 6 hours on the weekend to meditate in the shop. its driving me nuts-- just steaming offfff--mark

I'm lucky if in a month Iv'e got 8 hours in my shop =( Hopefully with some of the major projects around the house getting finished recently that number will increase this summer, but who knows.

Between my shop and the other shop, here recently? Some weeks this year have probably been pushing 80 hours. I can't wait until I can get some not-shop time.

Weekends usually 10 hours a day depending on household requirements. Lawn care will soon start eating into shop time.

I am considering concrete, painted green, instead of mowing this year.

A little bit of mower time goes a long way for me.

I am retired and still can only manage 20 to 25 hours in a week in the shop.

Itry to get in an hour per night just to relax. On the weekends 4-5 hour per day. Now with shows coming its more than that. Thankfullly my wife is understanding and supportive.

I only seem to manage a couple of hours a month in the shop...I have two small children, two dogs, I work afternoon shift etc...I would LOVE to spend a lot more time in the shop than I do, but I guess having kids that are too small to be helping with chores, leaves me to have to prioritize my work, and get to the knives when I can. It is terribly frustrating at times, but I know longer days in the shop are coming, I just have to hang tough, and give it hell when I do get in the shop! -Matt-

i know what you mean by terribly frustrating--it kills me--mark

Yeah that's the other way to say it! :p

I hope things improve for you...I know what it's like to feel held back and have skills deteriorate from lack of use or the experience of making more knives to help improve them. Take comfort in the fact that there are probably many more out there like us, as sad as that is. Hang in there, and don't let it eat you up! -Matt-

I started making kit knifes about 15 years ago but I was so busy with my wife, 3 kids, the dog etc, it never went much farther than just dabbling on weekends when I could get the time. As of about three years ago the kids were much older and did not need me so much so I got the old stuff out and got some new stuff and started all over again.
Its great now and in 45 days I will be at my first Blade Show!
Those of you with no time...Hang in there...it does get better.

If I'm lucky, a couple of hours of night shop time during the week. Other than that, maybe 4-6 hours of shop time on the weekends if I'm in town and if I don't have all kinds of other stuff scheduled for my by my wife. I really can't complain, my wife is pretty great about it. But by the time I get home from work, eat dinner, and do any chores I have, I rarely feel eager to head to the shop, especially with the thought of getting up and going to do the daily grind all over again in the morning.

6 years ago I was way behind before a show and literally had no knives ready to go 3 days before the show. Out of that 72 hr span, I spent 64 in the shop, no bullshit... It was simply the worst move I've ever made as I was so wiped out by the time I got to the show that I couldn't even function while there, and it took several weeks to recover.

Getting a lot of knives done was great, not being coherent enough to deal with customers, not so great....

I work at my full time job 14 days out of a month, so I get to spend a bunch of time in my basement shop, In a day I will usually spend 4 to 8 hours and boy does time fly by when the radios up loud and the grinders a running,LOL

during the week I will work my day job till five then come home and eat dinner

I'm usually in the shop by six and work till at least midnight, sometimes 2 am

on weekends I will sleep in till around 9 then get to work around 10, again working till midnight / 2 am

so my longest stretch is usually 14 to 16 hours

Often I would say about 60 hours a week, some weeks may be 20 hours, thing is the weeks I spend 60 hours it seems to feed on itself and and I wish there were more time
in the day. Sometimes I just get totally burned out and will stay out of the shop for 3 days or a week
