We all have survival kits for the wilds, but what do you keep at home to deal with disasters your most likly to face in your part of the country? In upstate N.Y. its blizards, ice storms and thunder storms with high winds. So for me its power outages, downed trees that break windows and roofs and water damage.I keep plywood,2x4s,traps,plastic,nails and duct tape in the garage.Being campers we have warm bags, tents, gas stoves with extra fuel and lanterns.Always have spare food and water. Now one thing I learned during the ice storm of March '91 (no power for 11 days)was that I didn't have a battery operated radio,so I got one that also has tv channels so I can get the news.
Now I realize that almost anything can be used for survival in one way or another but what do you keep on hand just for this purpose and if you have gone through something like I did with the ice storm was there anything you wished you had or had more of?

A kerosene heater is a nice thing to have available. I've got an old Kerosun Moonlighter, that also provides substantial light.

Some Aladdin kerosene lamps provide much more light that candles or "standard" kerosene lamps.

And I've got three portable wood stoves, including an old "sheepherder's" stove, which I plan on using as sort of a "fireplace insert", if I ever lose power for a significant time. I can run the stove's pipe part way up the chimneys of my two fireplaces, and take advantage of the stoves' increased efficiency in conserving wood, and being able to cook on the stoves.
