How about a Fiddleback Forge BushCamp Weekend this spring?!

I just got off the phone with Andy, thanking him for his hard work on this weeks batch of blades and had an idea...a Fiddleback Forge BushCamp Weekend. An opportunity for all of the dedicated users of Andy's blades to get together for a weekend and talk knives, practice some bushcraft, eat and drink well together in the great outdoors.

A couple of locations that I think would serve us well are either Gatlinburg, TN in the Great Smokies OR Red River Gorge in Slade County, KY.

Potential dates would be in late spring this year, maybe May 3-5?

Any additional input or interest would be appreciated so we can all try and get the ball rolling in the right direction!

THis is a great idea and depending on timing vs other commitments - would like to attend. I have another maker in my collection who does the same thing and while I missed their last get together, folks are still talking about it and another is in the planning stages.

I love Gatlinburg and so does my wife, if this happens there I'm in for sure! Would love to hang out with this group and take some photos!

Yeah. I think Gatlinburg is the best place to do this. If people would like to bring their families there would be some great fun for them as well!

Thats an awesome idea! Its a bit of a long haul from Northern Alberta down to Tennessee and Kentucky, but I am always looking for an excuse for a savage road trip on the motorcycle :P Interested to see how this develops

Gatlinburg is beautiful. The smokies was the first place I took my HB on it's first long hike and learned to be more relaxed with wooden handles in a high humidity environment. It's also the first place my wife used that knife...and why it is no longer mine :)

Mist, that photo review of The Great Smokies was stunning man! I get down there quite a bit to camp throughout the spring/summer months. It is one hell of a beautiful landscape with a ton of wildlife and plantlife.

I hope we can all figure out a date with Andy that will work to head to The Great Smokies of Tennessee around Gatlinburg for this years outing! I think it would be an outstanding event :)

Thanks man. It is beautiful up there I have been looking forward to getting back up there since I have upgraded my photography equipment. Spring would be nice, it was really hot in the middle of the summer. Hopefully we can figure out a date that will work for everyone.

I think this is a fantastic idea, I live in Tucson though, long drive for me :(

For a once a year Fiddleback event?! I mean ZCD is going to drive down here on a motorcycle from Northern Canada! You can make it happen for some beautiful mountain bushcraft/camping fun!

If this all gets put together, count me in for the weekend! I'm about an hour from Gatlinburg and would really enjoy spending some real time with the guys I've met through Andy's work.

Exactly! If I slog it all the way down there nobody has an excuse not to come :) I just have to come up with a good explanation to the border guards as to why I have 5 fiddlebacks on me heh. "You see sir, this one here is for fish, this here is for carving, this one over here is for general camp chores.. no no that one is just for show, mind your fingerprints..."

I never said I wouldn't do it, just that it was a long drive:D
Actually theres a really good chance that I'm driving out to visit my dad in Shreveport LA around the beginning of May, I could make this work I think...

LOL, so true! I will have at least 4 FB's with me if not 5! I plan on doing a little bit of everything while I'm in the smokies! A little fishing, shelter building, primitive fire making, campfire cooking (food prep). Gonna have to use them all! Depending on where we are, I'll probably bring my Mad River Canoe along with me...we can always spend some hours on the water too!

That reminds me.. what are the requirements to be able to fish legally in the Gatlinburg area? Is it as easy as buying a licence at a local gas station? A little more complicated? How about camping?

Fishing is permitted year-round in the park, from 30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset. The park allows fishing in all streams EXCEPT the following stream and its tributaries upstream from the point described:
Tennessee
Lynn Camp Prong upstream of its confluence with Thunderhead Prong.

Backcountry Camping Permits
A permit is required for all backcountry camping in the park. Backcountry permits are free but must be obtained in person-they are not available by phone, mail, or e-mail. For additional information please see backcountry camping. http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/permits.htm
