I've been wanting to put together a small fire kit that was wallet size, finally find a little container that is going to work

the fire steel is the "mini" 3/20" x 2", short section of a hack saw blade, 3 small firestraws (pjcb) and about 10" of duct tape

the container is for a compact flash card

the container is 1.75 x 2.25" and .022" thick- about four credit cards thick

the steel is small, but it definitely throws enough spark to get the pjcb going :)

NICE! I like the portability of it. Well thought out and executed! You could sharpen 1/2 the spine on that hacksaw to get maximum performance + a tiny blade that could be useful. I might be putting to much into it though. Thanks for sharing!

thanks gents

Nice. Is that one of the misch metal rods from goinggear.com?

from firesteel

goinggear might have one the same size though??

What is the duct tape used for?

the sticky side keeps tinder from blowing away and it actually burns decently itself once it gets going :)

not a bad idea, but for some reason I can better (more consistent) sparks from the non-toothed side- a guy could get rid of the teeth though- a small sharp blade I think would add to it- I'll probably play w/ that a bit

nice set up never seen firestraws before - how do they work?

just cut a straw to length, pull of some wisps of cotton- rub a little vaseline into it, take a toothpick and pack the wisps in, leave a little room at each end, carefully (very carefully :)) heat the end of the straw w/ a lighter and crimp w/ a pair of needle nose pliers- done :)

when you need to light a fire, open the straw (I usually slit them down the side), pull the contents out, fluff and light

I've got one of those card cases that I threw in a drawer, knowing that one day I would find a use for it. Thank you!!!!!

Seriously, though, that's a pretty cool idea.

Until I saw that last photo, I was going to observe that 2 or 3 REI matches would probably fit in that container.

Fantastic idea, really well executed, and I love that little container.

I'd be tempted to trim some fatwood to fit in the remaining spaces.

Thanks for sharing, this is really inspiring!
