How about a fire kit for the wallet

I think I would be too concerned about spontaneous ingition...

Seriously, though, that's a pretty cool idea.

Is that one of those Talibutt bombers they keep warning us about?

well I figured I'd go out and test the little kit today, took the "boss" with me- she's always a little skeptical of things I come up w/ (probably for good reason :))

I found some great cottonwood inner bark strips that a squirrel had evidently dropped, stuck a handful of it in my pocket

cleaned some snow off of a stump, laid a few twigs down for a base, dumped the bark strips down and opened up one of the firestraws. one of my concerns were that there might not be enough tinder in them (normally my firestraws are at least double this length), pulled out the pj treaded cotton and fluffed it up good (fully fluffed it made a pretty decent target)

w/ the wife watching I could almost predict how the test was going to go
I gave the steel two strikes and bingo- had a good flame going almost instantaneous :D this probably came as even more of surprise to me than my wife :)

I'll definitely chalk some of this test up to luck (hey a guy has to get lucky once in a while), but I think it is a viable little kit- clearly a backup to a backup (to a backup?), but as I always have my wallet w/ me it's nice to know that in a pinch a fire is possible

Congrats! Only a W&SS guy could get excited about something a squirrel dropped!:D My friends often laugh when I pick up some forest debris like it was a diamond!

just cut a straw to length, pull of some wisps of cotton- rub a little vaseline into it, take a toothpick and pack the wisps in, leave a little room at each end, carefully (very carefully :)) heat the end of the straw w/ a lighter and crimp w/ a pair of needle nose pliers- done :)

when you need to light a fire, open the straw (I usually slit them down the side), pull the contents out, fluff and light

What a great idea i'm going to have to try that, my pocket kit is a sparklite and the tabs that come with it wilth a mini steel - but bulkier than that set up - wonder where I can get the containers in the UK.....

I had to search around a bit to find the right container (some too thin, some too thick), but all of them held some kind of media card- this particular one was for a compact flash card

if you go to ebay you should find a good selection (sold w/o the card)- you may have to query the seller on the dimensions as often they aren't posted

btw anyone stateside that is interested in a container, feel free to pm me as I've got too many for my needs
