I'm new around these parts, but thoroughly enjoy Bladeforums. Figured I'd see what I could do about giving something back. Here's my version of a twist:

Being a prior service guy myself (8 years AD USAF), I know that it's tough to get by sometimes, especially with a family. If any BF member, in good standing, knows of a GI, regardless of branch of service, that is in need of a decent wristwatch, then this is the GIVEAWAY for you. Air Force, Army, Marine, Navy, or Coast Guard, they're all eligible.

This watch isn't new, but I'd rate it at a solid 90%, with lots of life left to it. It's a Casio G Shock, with a good water resistant rating. Solar powered, and Atomic setting, this is a great watch. I can email a .pdf of the owners manual to the recipient of the giveaway.

Post a story of the person who you think deserves this watch. Fellow posters in this thread can vote for who they feel is deserving. I'll let it run for a few days, and then we'll all pick who gets it, and I'll ship it out. Sorry, no box or papers, just the watch. (My Slimline Trapper is not included.)

I have a brother-in-law who joined the army last year. He's in training mode at this time, but he joined infantry, with the hope of seeing combat?!? I have no idea why my sister let him do that, but that was his choice, and they needed the money.

My sister had a decent job, then met this guy, and, putting the cart before the horse, ended up with a little girl. She lost her job, and hasn't held a steady job since.

Joining the army was the first step toward financial stability that they have taken as a family, although a scary choice, in these times.

My brothers and I have purchased a good fixed blade for him, (A Sog Seal Pup Elite) and are praying that things change before he has to ship out. He thinks it may be another year. I know a good watch would be a benefit to him, and I appreciate the support you are offering to our troops.

I was able to see them last weekend, and my sister is expecting another girl! Good news, I guess...

Thanks again and welcome to Bladeforums. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time here.

My 12 yr. old son is in Civil Air Patrol. Simi Valley, CA Unit 1986. I guess I am proud of my fist born son (he has a twin-but he was first out) CJ Jr. He sees his real mom about once a month when she shows up for her visitation, but his stepmother and I provide stability for him. His grades were terrible last year until he wanted to join CAP, but I told him no d's or F's and you can join. Without going into nasty details, the custody battle was tough on him and his brother, but I have been the custodial parent for 3 yrs. now, and things are getting better. He held his grades for the rest of the 2nd semester last year, and has been really growing in CAP. He finally cares about something other than an electronic button pushing game! He looks great in his BDU's (need to wash and iron from the pictures). It is quite a change from him being in a t-shirt with the neck collar stretched out looking almost as dorky as his dad did at that age. :D It really has helped him mature. I am a civilian, but always shed a tear at our national anthem, and cannot help but twist a gut with a bag pipe rendition of Amazing Grace at a military funeral. I guess I am a civilian patriot. I am silently hoping that CJ continues with CAP, and eventually joins the Air Force. Right now his twin brother (as well as his step brothers) are jealous of him. Thanks for the chance!

My good buddy Steve who just got assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC. He will be shipping out to Iraq next month. I know he will need a nice watch like this for what he will be doing there. Thanks for the chance for the opportunity to win this watch for him. Really nice gesture.

Gosh, I have been "enlisted" - working with former/retired Marines for 20 years. At least half of the employees in my Division (Maintenance and Operations in a public school district) are former/retired Marines. Throw in some Navy guys, I guess. That includes my Superintendent - retired former Chief of Staff at the local base, my boss' boss is a retired Colonel. And they think stuff still rolls downhill and bark orders like we have 10,000 troops at their command. Not hardly.

Do I qualify? I'm not exactly in good standing with the Supt or Asst Supt because I don't care about their former or present rank.

:p :D

Good looking boy, glad to hear you got him into something he cares about. I'm retired USAF, hope he trys it out when he's old enough.

I don't know anyone in need, so I cast one vote for this young man...

Well, I think I'll let this run through Sunday, 8-23-09. I'll try to muster up some voters, and Sunday night I'll declare a recipient. Thank you to those who have participated thus far.

I also vote that man's son

I am not in the service yet, hopefully I will earn a military scholarship this year, I am currently in charge of my high schools AFJROTC program and have earned the privileges to visit Tinker AFB and Oak Ridge National Research Lab and go through a couple of summer camps. Also tomorrow night I will be on a four man color guard presenting the colors at a football game.

:D why not add in a few more pics of things we are proud of, I earned this challenge coin last year. Only the top fourth of a percent of all AFJROTC cadets get to go to Honors camp.

CDHumiston and HWPaintballer,

Thank you for your kind compliments!:thumbup:

I received this coin from the Commander of one of our flying squadrons after I had a checkout ride in his F-15 over the Gulf of Mexico.

My team had went out in the Gulf and salvaged an ejection seat and intact canopy that was needed to determine if a Pilot paniced and self ejected.

The investigator from DC was on hand and cleared the pilot. It was an equipment malfunction. The Major who got punched out over the gulf stated "I was flying along minding my own business and suddenly I woke up onder cover"

The F-15 was a total loss, the pilot was fine but had to transfer out...

Well, it looks like by popular vote that this young man will be the recipient of my watch giveaway. I applaud you for sticking by him and helping him find the right path, and I encourage him to continue on, and possibly join the Air Force if that's what he desires. This country has a fine history of warriors defending it, and I'm sure we'd all be proud if he decides to take up watching over us for a bit.

CJ65, please email me with your address so that I can send the watch to this young man, and provide you with the .pdf instruction booklet.

Thank you to all! Lapp Dance, i will send you an email with address. Once again, very gracious. On behalf of CJ- jr.. Thank you!

Mr. Lapp,
I just want to say thank you again for the generous gift. My son Christopher, CJ jr. really loves the watch. He did his orientation today at Camarillo Airport, and got to "fly" a Cessna with his squadron. My wife disagrees with me that I gave CJ the watch, she said he is too young to know what to do with it. Just then he was turning on a bright light on that sucker. I just smiled, and she rolled her eyes. I told her it was a contest, he fit the criteria, and CJ won the watch. It is funny because I let her win most arguments, but I did not back down. I told her if I did not give CJ the watch, it would not be right for the person doing the give away. I made sure he had it today while he flew his orientation. Thanks again for bringing joy to my son's world. My wife will get over it in a year or two.:D
Those patches are cool too!

That's a great giveaway Lapp Dance!

cj65,
Your son is plenty old enough for the watch. My first G-shock was one of the original models back in the 80's and I was only like 9 or so when I got it. That one lasted, with original battery, until I was about 19.

Emanuel,
I left out alot of details regarding the watch. I have a great wife, (CJ's step mom) and her biggest concern was how it would make CJ's twin brother feel, as well as his two step brothers. She also found out that the watch was expensive (generosity of Mr. Lapp), and was concerned he may lose it. As husband and wife in a blended family, sometimes we accuse each other of playing favorites. She has hers, and I have mine. She percieves that I favor CJ, mainly, he just needs more encouragement than his brother. CJ has Asperger's Syndrome- mild case. It makes him want to learn everything about a certain subject, but can forget about his immediate surroundings while doing so. He is generally very disorganized. I knew I had little time yesterday to get him ready after school for the orientation flight. I had to rush home from work, grab his uniform BDU's and rush them off to school so he could catch the CAP bus to the airport. I was freakin' out when I went to look for his uniform, thinking I would find it scattered amongst the rest of the debris in his room, but, it was hung up in his closet, pants on the lower bar of the same hanger. His head cover, (hat for us civies), blousing bands, were neatly put inside his hat in the drawer. This has been a breakthrough, and is why I am very proud of CJ. His brother Killian will be getting my Griptilian, (I thought I would ease the pain for Killian). However, at 12, he is not ready for a knife. (I do let him open it sometimes when he asks, when just him and I are alone.) There are too many ways for that to go bad.
As far as my wife, it hurt my feelings that she took issue with her percieved "unfairness" to the other kids, but he is the only one who would have qualified for the give away. I reminded her that a "gift" is not earned, by definition. This was a contest, which by meeting criteria-he earned. So either way, her argument was not valid. I told her that if it was my step son (her boys) who was in CAP, I would have given the watch to one of them. I brag about my wife ad nauseum, because she is a great woman, this minor issue made me take a long hike in Simi Valley to work out my butt hurtedness. The dog loved the walk. We have 6 kids, I have 4 steps, and full time custody of my twins. A real dysfunctional Brady Bunch without an Alice. I would not want my life to be any other way.
I am glad to hear you say the watch will last, it will bug my wife every time she sees it. (evil grin)

Respect for kids in the CAP. I second his nomination.
