How about a JK Stash knife ?

After using my Tin knife quite a bit over the last couple of days I've grown quite fond of the little bugger and like it's simplicity, so it got me thinking again !!!!

I started to think that a slightly longer, very basic knife that we could cord wrap and stash as a back up blade would be handy to have. I'd like it not to have any notches, choils, guards or any other fancy do dads on....K.I.S.S principle. But it would have to have a nice thinned out sharp blade !!!!!

This was what I had in mind.......

What d'ya all think ? Maybe you could make one John and send it to me for evaluation !!!!!:D:thumbup:

I`ll check what I have in bar ends, and maybe make one up in the next batch I heat treat. ;)

If a knife such as this were to have a kydex sheath, maybe the sheath could be placed part way over the handle end thus extending the handle length during use ?

With the handle being straight like it is, I think that will work. I`ll make one up this weekend.

What about a small dimple in each side to really give kydex something to grab on to since the shape is so smooth.

That would work but I was just trying to keep it as simple and basic as possible, I don't think not having the dimples would be a serious issue anyway on a knife this size but ya never know till they are made eh !!!

You could drill a .5" hole on the blade (centered near the grip). It would give something for the kydex to grab and aid you if you use a pinch grip for fine work.

Another good point like CBryants, I guess John should decide what he thinks it needs, I don't know what drills John has and how much time taken drilling and adding dimples to kydex would affect the cost from a production point of view !

The blade on my drawing looks a bit too acute/pointy as well, if it was shaped like you usually do them on your EWOKs and such like that would look better John !

Pitdog, do you mean more like this for the tip?

I threw in some dimples since I was playing around with it. I do like your keep it simple design, though if the dimples can be made with little extra labor and aid to gripping or kydex grabbing they may prove handy. If they don't make a big difference to either action then your no frills design is the way to go.

Your drawing reminds me a lot of a TOPS ALRT

Yeah buddy that blade looks better shape. As for the dimples, if you place one hole around 1/2"Dia in the centre of the knife's handle area you can then dimple the kydex sheath so that it locates slightly into the hole in the knife if ya get me !!!
I think this is also what Bushcraftbraintrust was talking about !

Yes, I follow now. I had to re-read those. I like that idea.

Something like this? :D The only difference is the center hole is 3/8", as I don`t have a 1/2" drill bit. Bad pic, I did`nt feel like setting up my light box.

Very nice John. After looking at that, I'm wondering if the large hole should be on the blade itself. You could than cord wrap it and put a couple fishing hooks and a mini fire steel under the wrap. While unconventional, the hole on the blade would allow for sheath rentention and leverage on pinch grip cutting tasks. C Bryant, kudos, very nice work. John, besides knife making, NASA should hire your for rapid prototyping.:D

I'm really interested in how these are gonna turn out.

I think the dimple idea for kydex retension is a great one. I also think that if the dimple is placed closer to the tip (ricasso area maybe) it could give the user a better grip for drilling by placing your thumb in it like BrainTrust said. Since the handle is so short (necessary for the design) another way to keep a grip on it sounds like a good idea.
