How about a Mnandi with a thumbstud ?

Hey guys......don't you wish Chris Reeve added a thumbstud to the Mnandi? He could put matching inlaid wood in the thumbstud.....how cool would that be? I like the knife, but hate that little figure groove to open it.

Let me offer an opposing point of view. Thanks, but no thanks! It would be an entirely different knife. Would be virtually impossible to put a useable thumb stud on the Mnandi in its current design (without making it stick out like a sore "thumb"). I love it just the way it is (well, maybe with more Damascus and inlay options!) Now, if I had only one arm/hand ..... I might feel differently. If I must .... I can open the Mnandi (even with the new nail nick) with one hand (by using my thumb and index finger). But I see nothing wrong with opening this elegant little folder with two hands .... just like my granddad and great-granddad did in the days before thumb studs, Spydie holes, and flippers!!

It is actually very easy to open with one hand once you get the hang of it:

- Pinky on the clip
- Pinch the nail nick between thumb and middle finger
- Pull out until the tip is out of the frame
- Continue with thumb only in one fluid motion (do not stop when switching to thumb only).

Very natural once you get used to it.

The mnandi is perfect the way it is. It has nice clean lines and i dont think a thumbstud would add to it. Like others stated, once you get the hang of it, its easier to open. Just takes some practice. Its easier if carrying one all the time. I was always switching between umnumzaan, sebenzas and mnandi, so the little mnandi always felt small in hand, but that never made it difficult to open.

I've never handled one, but I don't believe that a thumb stud would look very good on on the mnandi. The lines are too smooth and classic for a thumb stud.

I think it would change the appearance, and make it much less elegant. It is a gentleman's knife, it is not supposed to be a easy open work knife. That is why CRK has the sebenza:thumbup:

No on the thumbstud, but I do wish they would go back to the older style "sharper" nail nick. I like the looks better and it's a breeze to open with only the thumb.

No thumbstuds on my Mnandis please!! They are the way they should be, just as they are, IMHO. I would not buy one with a thumbstud.

Thanks, but no thanks!

It would look ugly!

And what's wrong with opening a knife two-handed?

Kind regards,

Jos

Horrible idea, maybe if they cut the nick all the way through, it would help, but putting that type of crap on one of my Mnandi's would not do.

And, IMO, the Mnandi is too small for one.

Appreciate all the feedback......although mostly negative. I have a few small custom knives that have small thumbstuds and they look elegant and beautiful.....if done well.
I have one by Koji Hara that is mother of pearl and the thumbstud matches in pearl. I still would like a Mnandi with a matching inlaid stud......but I guess I am outnumbered :)

I love the look of the nail nick and I really enjoy opening it the old fashioned way - with two hands. It also prevents the blade from getting all smudged up like it does when I use one hand to open it. It's perfectly engineered as is!

Take a look at the William Henry B10.

I have one with the older-style nick, and have no issue opening it one-handed. Another vote for: No thanks.
