How and where do you keep your knives?

i keep mine in a cabinet in the garage above my workbench. it might seem odd but i keep my billfold and keys there too. it's real easy for me to change up gear there.

I agree with Blues... I live in a cave with a bear and hide both my knives in a hole in the rock where a rattlesnake lives. The skunks and I generally get along.....but they complain about my smell......300

When you get to my age you know you have knives...........you just can't remember where they are........:D

Mine live in my safe.........:)

I need a storage set-up someday. Some reside at my desk in the office, some in the gun safe. In the bedroom some reside on top of the dresser, some on the bookcase.

A lot of mine are in a wooden chest from habor freight. Some in a 2 drawer plastic filling cabinet. Some in a display case and some in the safe. Pretty much everywhere. Mom in law got this for me, she's a doll.

1) nice collection
2) i dont feel so bad with my measly dozen
3) i think there are meetings for people like you !

Meeting wouldn't help, yes I have a problem but I am dealing with it one knife at a time :)

I think I see a few Gene Ingram and Charles May knives there. You don't have a problem in my opinion my friend!

p.s. I dig the Fiddleback Forge EDC, too.

Thanks, was getting a complex for a minute and then remembered where I was. Among friends and addicts. Gene and Charlie do great work. Dave Winston is also a winner in my book. Andy, well his grinds and wood are among the best.

Keep mine in my gun safe, but mostly for convenience so I have them all in one place. Actually had to buy a 2nd gun safe to put some of my guns in...the first was a bit too full :)

Knives not oiled, kept in rolls and folding cases, some in plastic storage containers, then into a 26 gun fireproof Liberty safe (725 lbs empty).
overflow into two 8 drawer rolling tool chests ($99 from "Wally", similar USA made units are $1000 and up).
overflow of overflow: 11 drawer tool cabinet with butcher block type top, 56" x 36" x 18"
remainder: every table and cabinet surface x 2 storey house, plus workbenches in basement.

Summary of my experience with knife storage ideas on Blade Forums.

My sincere thanks to all Forum Members for this great thread on knife storage.

My wife just told me that she had saved and stored (hidden) many knives that I had thought lost or stolen during the last 50 years. I now have about 80+ production (Benchmade, KaBar, Cold Steel, CRKT, Camillus, Buck, Gerber, SOG, Puma, very old, very large and excellent Schrade Folding Hunters and D.U. commeratives, Harsey, Elishewitz, Bob Lum, Dozier, Steigerwalt, Al Mar, AG Russell, Darrell Ralph and Boker autos, fixed blades and manual folders, etc.) knives, some in sheaths, but many never carried, used or sharpened. Airline Security did take many. There are many small slip-joints and lock-backs, but at least 40 of the folders are about 5" to 7" closed, and many are fat or wide, like the Dozier Bobcat and the Crawford Natural.

I am not a collector and I have read and heard conflicting advice on knife storage. Your thread has provided great information, and pointed me in several excellent directions. I do not think I will display, so I do not need beautiful glass cases and chests, although I will say I was delighted with your great photos of wonderful collections.

I have made a summary of what I have tried and what I think of these methods. I have some corroded and rusted knives that cannot be fully restored. I do not want to repeat my past mistakes.

I have purposely put my innocence and ignorance on display. I would truly be grateful for comments on what I think and suggestions for other methods of storage and care.

Blade Forum suggestions:
1. Spyderco small (18 knife) pack is excellent. Design is extremely well thought out and the clear inside pouches allow quick identification. I learned about this great item in this thread. I will get at least one more. While the pouches are a little short and not super wide, the protection is excellent and secure. You can stuff a few fixed blades lengthwise in the folds. AG Russell is stocking these. Larger Spyderco may have even more hidey-holes for fixed blades.
2. Plano tackle boxes (from Bass Pro) was a great idea. They are excellent. I am not sure about foam padding on the bottoms.
3. Bill's Custom Cases look like another excellent idea. Bill encourages contact and I will not speak to him until Monday.

Other ideas from the internet or the few knife sellers within a 75 mile radius from my home.

4. PVK, Zero Tolerance and Kershaw brand and sell the same excellent 18 knife pouch with deeper pockets than Spyderco, but you have to dig the knives out to identify them. These cases will accomodate the Cold Steel 6" Ti-Lite Titanium in a pouch and they are very well made, as is Spyderco. Great for long term storage in a controlled environment. May have been mentioned on Blade.
5. Sack-ups are the only available specific knife storage offered in my area. They are fine inexpensive protection for small knives. The small one has some large pouches, but they are not tall. I like them well enough. They were a good place holder while I found better solutions. They are bulky and my wife hates them. I am always afraid that she may find more knives to save.
6. Yak Pak 12 knife. For kids. Too much unusable space.
7. There are many non-branded items for sale on the internet. Details are sketchy.
8. SMVK offers a United roll-up, but details are sketchy. A phone call may clarify.
8. I may not know how to search, but the very expensive Benchmade and Maxpedition Dodecapods do not identify pouch size, height, width and depth. Just send the $80. They look well made, but I cannot tell what their pouch sizes are. There may be no storage pick-up at 2 or 3 times the price

Subject to more detail and information about storage of very large Folders and fixed blades, Spyderco, ZT/Kershaw and Plano offer good, solid value for multiple Medium to Large folders. Bill's Custom, SMVK, Plano and AG Russell may have the solution for Very Large Folders and fixed Blades.

Productive criticism welcomed.
