How are you sharpening your S90V?

My mule just came in. It's in need of a little sharpening and I'd rather avoid the diamond pad on a brand new, limited knife.

Sal says the SharpMaker will work just fine on S90V. If anyone would know, he would.

Personally, I sharpen S90V the same way I do any other steel, freehand on DMT diamond hones. It just takes longer.

I use my standard Sharpmaker to touch up my S90V Military but I haven't lost the edge on it either. Takes just a few strokes for touch up

i'm reconsidering. it's not nearly as sharp as my other spydies, but i have a billion other knives that can shave. the edge seems slightly obtuse, but it does cut and i'm bettin it'll stay that way a long time if i don't thin it any further.

puttin my faith in spyderco giving it this edge for a reason.

I think it has this edge because it is harder to sharpen with the factory equipment. Mine is also not as sharp as the other two mules. it shaves arm hair, but is very rough and scratches the skin as well becuase of the extra effort to do it.

i went ahead and gave it a couple passes on the ceramic rod. sharpened super easy, super fast.

gave it the orange 550 wrap. nice knife.

figured i'd snap some shots. it's dark, but it'll do.

Plus one on the Sharpmaker. I have not had to touch up my S90V Mule, but I have touched up my Military on the Sharpmaker.

Take care,

Doug

Is the Mule set at 30 or 40 degrees? Mine just arrived and I'm thinking of giving it a few swipes.

Thanks,
Mark

Sal said that the factory edge is set at 30, but you should sharpen the bevel at 30, and then give it an edge of 40. Someone else can explain a lot better then me.

On topic: I touch up my S90V Mule on my Sharpmaker. Never had a problem with it.

Sharpmaker works fine - might have to go semi-freehand to match the edge bevel. Finished off by stropping on cardboard with jeweler's rouge or diamond paste will put a wicked edge on.

I sharpen S30V and D2 on my sharpmaker, i just do 20 strokes instead of 10.

I use the super fine diamond on the Edge-Pro, then the EP waterstones, then finish with mylar tapes in 3,000 and 7,000 and .5 and .25 micron diamond on leather.

SharpMaker makes easy, short work of my Millie in S90V. I would put it equal in sharpening with my Sebanzas... just perfect.
