how big a blade do you really need?

Ira,
I didn't say what said attacker would be armed with. If it's a club, blade, broken bottle,or ice pick then in my eyes a knife in the hands of a propperly trained and motivated person is the best "tool" for the job. If said attacker was brandishing a firearm I wouldn't hesitate to use the same level of force. Hope this explains my Earlier post more clearly.

First rule of a knifefight.......turn and run
Unless you're in LE, anytime the fight thing happens it's time to leave.
Second rule, bring a gun!
I believe this is the second best way to avoid a knife fight. Once you are confronted with deadly force not of your choosing, there is no reason to limit your option to the same level of force -- just to be fair. If he's got a gun and you wait for him to up the force level, you're dead. I would always go to a .45 as a fight stopper before I'd consider matching knife fighting skill with a guy I don't know.
using a knife as the first choice of weapon and the firearm as the second choice is ABSOLUTELY insane.

To directly answer the original question, a 3 1/2 inch folder is plenty. Fits in your pocket, goes anywhere but the airlines and jail. It's always in my pocket for opening packages, envelopes and other important stuff.

Ummm - a knife and a gun *are* essentially the same level of force.

I’ll join the ranks of “knives aren’t for fighting.” IMHO, only a skilled martial artist can successfully use a knife in a fight. For me, I’m with Tom...knives are for opening boxes. I carry a “tactical folder” on my pocket (SOG Night Vision), but if it came down to a fight, it would stay there. I’d rather use other means to defeat my foe. That’s one huge reason I carry a handgun! :)

If you're walking around with 2 guns & 50 rounds of ammo, I would think that 10 to 1, others are doing the same. Why not forget the knife & pack another gun? OR move? I hope your city isn't that tough. Good luck to you!

Libra - I don't really trust you or your "zero-grind CQC6". I checked the thread which you referred to and I'm not wholly convinced. I will, however, refrain from posting on this issue again. Live and let live.

I'm goanna try to track down a strider eblt, I think I can secure it behind my mag pouch. Hopefully I'll never use it for anything more serious than opening boxes, But I believe in being prepared!!!!

I think some of the guys are being a bit hard on you. Sure, any of us would revert to firearms before blades to protect ourselves, I think that's fairly obvious. What they should just do is answer your question. After all, one can never be too prepared.

In answer to your question, I would carry a fixed blade and a folder. Depending on how you carry the fixed blade, size will be an option. If you can comfortably carry anything you want then a 6" blade like a SOG Tsunami, BM Nimravus or Gerber Mk II is perfect. If size is an issue then there are plenty of smaller fixed blades, like the BM Mini Nimravus, Gerber Mk 1 and Gerber Guardian. There are thousands to choose from but this is what works for me. You should also carry a folder but this would probably only be used for utility type tasks. Something like a BM 710 or 730, Spyderco ____ (fill in a model no.) or a SOG Vision would do the job.

The blade is just part of your kit, like OC spray and an ASP baton. Hopefully you have a vest and a shotgun handy as well. I believe in being prepared. Just last week family friends of ours were victims of a home invasion where 7 armed youths came in through the front door and took whatever they wanted and left with the family car as well. Yes, yes, there were lots of mistakes in the homeowners security setup, but the point is that **** like this happens and we can never be too prepared. So if you want to carry a knife as part of your kit then I say right on. I also say load that 12ga and make sure you have enough spare mags or speedloaders for the handguns.

The world is turning bad. Stay safe.

Boy, do I agree that the world is turning bad, seems every day the calls get worse, or maybee I'm just old.

I would suggest a light fixed blade in the 4 inch bladed size.

Spyderco Moran Drop Point, an excellent knife.

If you are looking at a folder....

I would suggest one of the new Spyderco Compression Lock offerings like a Temperance Jr or ATR.

hmmm... my bad... I shoulda made my wife read the whole thread out loud to me... dang

harley45-

Note.... Some of the posters do not read the entire thread, that is why they are still responding to your original question without the understanding of your clarifying post.

Gentlemen, please try to read through the WHOLE thread before giving a quick opinion. Harley 45 is a LEO looking for a knife as a back-up.
IMHO, it is totally reasonable that he carries a knife whether folder or fixed blade. 3.5-4" blade is a good middle way but even bigger is appropriate.
What price range? Is a fixed blade a problem? I assume that you can carry double edged and automatic knives of any size. Am I right?

You know your right, didnt read HARLY 45 correction, big apoligiesare in order. I would recommend a Spyderco endura or the emerson lagriffe . i own both Cant go wrong with either. Again sorry for my hasteness in reply.

Ain't never gonna happen. ;)

As far as what Harley should carry I'd make mine an auto. Which auto? I have no idea because I don't look at auto's because it's illegal for me to own or carry one so why frustrate myself? :p

I see why you're asking for a knife, considering that there could be situations where you couldn't draw your service gun, then you might want a knife hidden somewhere that could do the job.
I'd say take a knife between 3" to 4", and if there's no rules barring you from getting double edged blades, get one. Although you're going to use it for cutting boxes for more than anything, a dagger like blade would probably make the task faster if such as need for a last ditch effort arises.
Personally I'd put more and more practice on both guns, and try to get good accuracy every single time. I'd think that if you did run out of 50 rounds you're in deep trouble.
Update: In light of what was said below, I'd take a dagger that's sharpened one edge and the other side as a false edge. That would probably be a good compromise.

Well, I'm not in law enforcement, but if I was I would definately carry a knife. Not nessesarily for defense, but I'd want one that would work well for that in case it was ever needed.

Having ridden quite a bit with some LE friends of mine, I know that a good portion of law enforcement is serving the people. Knives can be used for much more than stabbing someone.

As far as blade length I'd choose something around 4". Why? Because anything longer can get in the way doing the many things that LEO's do (getting in and out of car, jumping fences, etc.). I'd also want something with a partially serrated edge for cutting seatbelts and such things in emergency situations. For blade shape I would want a single edged dagger type blade. The dagger because of the possible defensive use of the knife and single edged because of the safety factor if you're cutting someone out of a seatbelt. I'd probably want it in D-2 steel but that's just my preferance. You'd definately want it to be somewhat rust/stain resistant and D-2 would be about the minimum in that respect IMO.

But then, each of us has a different idea of the perfect knife for each use. I'm just a common sense sort of guy and that's just my opinion! Y'all have a great evening! Daryl
