How big does it have to be.

For most of my cutting needs, I like 2.5 to 3.5 inches, although for some things I like more length. What would be really interesting would be if we could somehow "reanimate" Ozti and show him all our modern cutlery, then see what he would pick.

That would be interesting.

I like blade sizes between 2 1/2" to 3".

Which means the knife size ranges from 3 1/4" to 4"

What I like so much about slippies is the difference in design
Where a medium Stockman or Canoe has 2 1/2" blade, and a Doctor or large Stockman has 3" blade
But they are so very different in feel and weight

Its the folded length that is most important together with the weight. Its posible to do most things with a small knife but a medium knife (as my case stockman 3 1/2) do everything at least as good. And in my pockets it still carrys 100% comfortable. This makes it my prefered EDC size.

Whatever you're happy with. I get by with a Vic huntsman, but prefer to have my small Sebenza in my pocket for the ride.

I really prefer to carry my large Sebenza in a coat pocket or back pocket, but I don't need it. I've started substituting my small Seb some days for my jumbo Case stockman. I get by just fine with that. I don't think I could go smaller right now though, or kick the Huntsman out of my pocket.

Funny but this observation applies to me. I find myself carrying smaller knives in all facets of my life. For EDC I used to carry a clip/tact style knife. I still carry a tact now and again when I do I usually carry a small slippie. But most times I'll just have a slippie between a Peanut and Mini Trapper in size as my EDC. For Hunting I used to carry custom sheath knives (still love 'em)but have gone to a S&M File and Wire Mountain man Trapper and am thinking of going to a standard size Trapper. I guess one gets a little wiser and will keep finding ways to carry less and less as gravity starts taking its toll on a man lol. The "work smarter not harder" philosophy has become my lifes mantra:D Jack you have made my day with another one of your astute observations:thumbup:, aloha, mk

I find that most tasks can be done with a peanut, but I like the size that a sodbuster jr. gives. It's comfortable in the hand and the blade is functional. I guess I'm more particular with the shape of the blade rather than the length.

JackKnife mentioned the "shadow pattern" earlier. Is that a term used for all bolsterless knives, or that particularely nice one in the picture?

Pretty much. It's usually mention with the pattern name. ie shadow toothpick. shadow hunter, or shadow trapper.
