How big of a job is it to change grips on a basic blade?

I'm wonderin if anyone's tried RIT dyeing them???

Probably wouldn't work with Resiperene-C being all hygrophobic or hygroscopic, whatever it's termed...but if a Hog were to submerge the handle in highly concentrated vat of the stuff...I just wonder what'd happen...

Anybody try that yet?

My biggest concern would be the dye rubbing off and staining stuff, second biggest concern is uneven messy coloring.

I might just be the guineapig and try it, will wait for more advice and input beforehand.

Sharpie makes a "permanent" laundry marker...Rub a Dub, it's called.

I've used it to blacken out branding and slogans on clothing & shoes to good results...every so often I have to re-apply, but it's pretty impervious. Of course Res-C being what it is-- it's likely a game-changer, but on the plus side, it wouldn't be hard to color in a mark on, say, the bottom side of the grip and see how it holds up!

Cool option, thanks for sharing it in general Im a big fan of grip tape and I might consider this for my bb13. For the HOGB8 though, my heart is set on factory appearance.

How does the beefier grip feel in hand, not just the size, hows the grippiness?

I like the beefier handle, I shaped mine using the hockey tape by just adding a little here and there until it felt right. It makes the bb13 feel more solid through the wrist when swinging.

It's super grippy, I think we call them high tack grips at work, and they definitely live up to that name. Think grabbing things wearing dish gloves grippy.

They don't come off easily either. It's a bit of a struggle to get them on if you don't have a solid technique/strong hands, but once it's on it's not coming off until you roll it off.

I just Dyed a set of G-10 w/ an idye poly or IDYE Poly(brand) similar to RIT but specific for polymer/synthetics. RIT also make a RIT More or Extra..or something ..that is also polymer specific

...I would try that first..I've had good luck w/ both products..and the Res C should take that dye like a champ. Some slight transfer initially, but it's quickly settles.

This is the result I got from the idye poly...I had tried standard RIT prior...didn't put a dent in this G-10 (RIT standard had worked on different manufacturers G-10)

I would think that Res C would take the dye even better.

The smudges/discoloration towards the front of the scales in the second pic is just some Flitz that hadn't been wiped down.

Very interesting, thanks. I cant decide between black and satin HOGB8 because with tan grips the satin looks better imho, whereas I like the black coating because it makes the penetrator tip pop.

That actually looks excellent. If I could get it that black with res c, Id be sold on it.

Wow, you're not kidding...that stuff done the trick...Is it colorfast? any bleeding or rubbing off?

Also, Patrick I notice your sundial's rusting...I think you're laying too many blades on top of it with residual stripper left on em :p

There was some slight transfer initially..rubbing off on hand or cloth..only very slight..washed/rinsed a couple of times (hot soapy water/t-brush )...G2G..I have to state. ..I did not let it dry/set after dying...I immediately was handling it..And the color is holding on scales w/ no tranfer/rubbing off.

Took me many years.. of doing absolutely nothing.. to get the patina on that sundial Juuust right...coming along nicely, I'd say:D

Oh

Side note:

The poly dye will stain/darken bare steel...can be buffed/polished away...but I wouldn't want to try it w/ a satin blade, you would ruin the finish trying to buff it out, I believe. Might be able to mask off the blade/steel, but..I haven't tried that. Also, I'm referring to SR101..I haven't used it on any of the INFI knives I've stripped...may not affect INFI at all

And I'm not sure if it would affect the coating color..The regular RIT won't. .but the dye for poly/synthetic might...if you plan on a coated blade, that will eventually be stripped...I would reccomend dying the Res C first, before stripping.

Icky - I cannot believe that knife is THAT KNIFE!

I have seen the after pictures of your MOFO and had remarked on how cool it looked previously. I cannot believe that they were BLACK G10 handles that came out to that unique green - I thought it was a piece of G10 from an old/recent custom job hanging around at the shop, or something. Had no idea you had dyed it that color. That combo is so unique and special, I cannot say enough about how nice your project turned out...remarkable...

The top pic is the "before" pic, just after stripping. The MOFO came w/ olive green G-10..I dyed the scales black. It did look cool, I kind of regret dying and removing that finish, but the dye had stained the finish and I was already committed.

You cannot dye G-10 (Or any material, I'd imagine) a lighter color than it already is.

I could probably strip/remove the dye and bring the scales back to olive green.

HA!!! OHHHHHH....gotcha - well I like the just after stripping with green handles derivative the best, and didn't you force the patina as well?...I was amazed (and obviously so) that you could turn black into green!!!

Either way, projects teach us all a little something along the way...I totally ruined a perfectly bad SAR 5 G-10 handle necessitating a full on custom job brought about by family members that was returned to me as a gift in a form I would never have expected!

"Oh no" is right..I make it so hard to borrow my knives...first I lye and say I don't have one.. (as it's in my hand) ...then I tell them they have to fill out some paperwork if they want to borrow...and ask if they have their original Birth Certificate present.

Yea, I should have left it...I agree, looked pretty cool in between...And no, I didn't force that patina...that's how it looked after stripping (CitriStrip)

I was a little bitter after I messed it up..Just gives me a reason to get another...really want one w/ micarta scales.

Oh, and thanks for all the compliments, sir.

People who know me have learned to not ask to borrow knives or tools. And thanks for the advice on the dye, never cared for tan. I suppose you can probably get other colors that Busse doesn't offer to really make it your own. (Gears are grinding in my head right now.)
