How big (or small) do you like yours?

3" +/- generally does it for me. I know that a lot of people like something the size of a Spyderco Military or Police model, they're both just to big for me (must be the small hands).

Between 3 and 3 1/2 does everything I need to do. Starfish, your small Sebbie will be perfect if you buy smaller apples.
Mike:)

Fixed blade i like between 7-10 inch bl;ade very thich stock 1/4 inch is nice

Folder i like between 3.25 and 4 inches theres really no need for anything over 4 inches in a folder

Sorry sifu lovers:D

EDC: 3-3.5 :).
General outdoor work: 5-6 inches, with a "Woodcraft" style blade:D.
Really heavy work: anything over 9 inches, seems to work well enough.

:D

Personally I won't take anything smaller than a 4" and prefer it in the range of 4" - 5"

Do I need a blade that large? na, probably not, but who the hell cares what is needed :D

I like a folder with a blade length of approx 3.5 inches. On a fixed blade I like 6-8 inches depending on the blade style.

Regards,

Ed

That's mrd74 thinking outside the box again :D:rolleyes::D

Great responses all, thanks very much, and happy holidays again!

I work in an office. I carried my LCC M/A when it was new, but it's just too much knife for this social atmosphere. I'm going back to a mini-SOCOM.

3" does everything I need a knife to do at work. 3.5" is more fun sometimes but I find that it draws a lot more attention. Opened a box this week in front of some folks with a 3.6" blade and one guy yells out "got enough knife there?" I don't need that much attention.

I find that anything smaller than 2.75" I can hide with my hand when I open boxes or mail. It's probably the most appropriate size for me at work.

I'm more interested in handle-lenghth -about 4 inches max because I like to carry my folders all the way down the left-frontpocket of my jeans.

I do carry my BM 690 on its clip because it's such a signature-part of the overall design.

Uhmmm... Welcome! ;)

I like the blade sizes on a typical large stockmen, otherwise 2-1/2 to 3-3/4 inches for folders. For fixed blades, I like 4 to 6 inches or so. I guess if I was chopping or hacking, I would like a machete, 18 or so inches. If I'm at work, sometimes I'm kinda scrunched up reaching into an electrical enclosure and a large blade would get in the way.

3.5" seems about perfect to me on an edc folder, but I like a sheath knife best, with a blade of 4" to 4.5". They all feel best with a handle length of 4.5" to 4.75" in my hand. Just goes to show that you don't have to be smart in order to be opinionated. :p
Hope y'all have a very merry Christmas!

My EDC at the office (Defense plant), is a W-H Kestral, sub-2". The minute I'm home, I switch to a BM-705 (2.9"). For outdoor activities, I switch to a BM 730 or 710. There's always a good fixed blade around when needed - generally 4-5".

I found a 3.5 to 4" handle optimal for an EDC folder. Obviously, the maximum length of the blade is determined by this.

I hate to fit in too well with the crowd... :) ...but I also prefer the 3" to 4" range for most utility work. The one knife I always carry is a CRK Large Sebenza with a 3-1/2" blade. It's big enough to handle just about any job short of chopping while providing enough fine-control for small work when necessary. A blade that size without a great grip would be a lot less versatile.

For defense I prefer to get as much blade as I can get. In Texas, the law limits me to a 5-1/2" blade, so that's what I carry. Most of the time that means a REKAT Sifu folder. When I'm away from civilization I carry my Bob Dozier Texas #6 fixed blade. As a bonus, I have found that both of those are also quite useful as general-purpose utility blades, despite the larger size.

I have rarely found the need for a blade smaller than 3-1/2", but I do generally have a shorter blade available on one of my multi-tools.

I like to carry small fixed blades. Blackie Collins buddy system, Ed Chavar mini fang, CRKT F4, etc. I also like to carry a slipjoint pen or stockman. The slipjoint does not scare sheep and the fixed can skin a wolf if needed.....
