How 'Bout a Burger, Mr. McCracken?

Why all the propane hate, fellas?:D For a bunch of guys that run around with 18" 2lb knives, you sure a chicken when it comes to a little gas;):D I'm just teasin'. I always get nervous when I have to shut off the propane gas value on my grill. I don't see it exploding, but maybe that value is going to rocket off and take me hand with it:eek:
Charcoal tastes much better, but it's a damn mess. I'll probably get a charcoal grill once this one dies, but it's so nice to have a clean burning/easy to maintain grill.

Aha, my grill has a nifty charcoal catcher on the bottom to take care of the mess! Now, about those freezers... :D

STill, when it's cold outside and you want a fire quick, propane is it.

A neat way to get charcoal ready to cook within 2 minutes is to use a hair dryer like the blower on a blacksmith's forge. Light one side of the charcoal pile, and blow the flame through the rest of the pile; move 'em around as needed. Careful you don't melt the grill itself though. :o Ever seen charcoal so hot it produced two feet of light blue flames? Nifty.

I thought briefly about just putting a circle of rocks in the kitchen and lighting a fire, but we repainted not long ago.

we had a nice fireplace in the living room when i was a youngster. you do need a smoke hole in the roof ridge ends to let it all out tho. it has the added benefit of heating up the rest of the long house and providing light for the dinner guests at the feasting tables. the tars and creosote in the smoke keeps the vermin at bay as an added side effect. no need for ceiling paint either.

ah, home sweet home, what parties mum had when dad came home from raiding, mead, ale by the barrel, friendly duels around the cook fire, throwing axes at the thralls tied to the log end, a whole pig or two roasting over the open fire... those were the days.

Great Granpaw had a bigger one, course he needed it, what with all them jarls and armsmen he had. he had so many fires in there that he has smoke holes along the roof ridge as well as the ends. the picture is on a quiet day, all peepaws sojers were out playing in britain with the opposing team. just a few thralls walking down the road...

i'm well preserved, not bad for 1300 (i'm still a teen ager, only 13 centuries old, peepaw - he's 4500, almost middle aged, says we have good genes, but his great great great grandmaw disagrees, why just last week her great aunt told us she says it's down to good whiskey, partyin' and lotsa foolin' round in the hay barn, but she won't let on to the rest of the family, wouldn't be fitting)
