I need a grinder. The knives I've made have been filed to shape and it's time to upgrade. I was going to buy a craftsman 2 x 42 cause money is tight. I found this on craigslist the owner says it's 1 x 42 but wasn't sure. Think it's a 2 x 42 with a 1 inch belt in it or in fact a 1 x 42. Think it's worth the money? What if I get them down to $50? Thanks in advance

Don

Looks like it's designed for a 1" belt. 1x42 is a pretty standard size. Not familiar with Craftsman's version though but probably a good step up from HF 1x30

You could do a lot worse than that. I started on a 1x42 and it got me through a lot of knives (although I wish I had started with something better). A lot of 1" grinders have a 1/3hp motor or even a 1/5hp--the one you link to says it is 1/2hp.

For $50 or even $80, it's doubtful you find many better options in that size and power range. Even if you upgrade down the line, you'll still probably use it for various things.

You'll be a little limited on belt types, but it should still be ok for standard work.
