I was reading the thread asking for updates on the SHOT show, and there's a youtube video of a guy with a 4 minute video on attending the SHOT show. In it, he says "I'm not a knife guy..."

I was like WTF? #1 - you're a guy, #2 you're attending the SHOT show, how on earth are you not a knife guy?

It's like me going to a Vegas strip club with lots of women, and saying "I'm not a guy who likes women"...

Isn't it in our DNA as guys that we're knife guys?? Regardless of culture or upraising, I think there's a primal gene in our biology that makes us want to own a knife, hold it, use it, admire it, and get more knives.

Maybe I'm just out of touch with these new generation guys who are not knife guys... but what the hell? Am I that out of touch?

Society has been brainwashed into believing the Gubmint will take care of every need, and that being self reliant and able to use basic hand tools is not needed.

I think even hundreds of thousands of years ago, man's basic tools were: fire / knife. Even today, my two most important tools are: flashlight / knife. Have we de-evolved so much that modern men don't care about either?

Sad. :(

I think it's because they are just afraid of the negative reactions they might get. I think the desire to be politically correct and to not want to rustle feathers makes most modern guys shy away from interests in knives.

That's too bad, really. Have man's basic tool been so marginalized by modern society that we fear to speak out of our fondness for it? :(

SHOT show is primarily a gun and hunting show. Im primarily a gun guy and other of my gun enthusiest buddies are pretty much indifferent to knives as long as they cut a steak and they can clean and cape a moose. So the original statement doesnt make too much sense. Its like a guy going to the NAMM show and saying he is not a Guitar guy....

These two thoughts are certainly not mutually exclusive.........:D

its because of feminism:thumbdn:

before i throw my two cents in on this comment please expand upon your statement....

its complacency pure and simple. people are lazy and want others to take care of them for them. people are more than willing to sacrfice most any freeom for a sense of security albeit a false sense of security. no one is really ever secure your on a ball of mud hurtling thru the cosmos and your life can be snuffed at any second, i want to see the governing entity that can provide you asteroid protection.. hope that makes sense to people

ergo Basic knowledge and competencty with basic tools > false sense of security

in my situation , dad wasn't around . im a knife guy, only because i get my outdoorsy-ness from pop. i see a lot of young boys nowadays playing games constantly . thats where the problems lie. with modernization and the progression of "society" , few kids are allowed to have "weapons". my sig-other asks why i need a weapon everyday. wether im carrying my 1911, or my fixed blade, its a tool to me. a tool that if handled responsibly can bring food, and security . and in bad situations , it can be a weapon to defend.

wait till society collapses, and watch all the PC non-knife guys suffer.

id rather have it and not need it, you know the rest.

sorry if this is rantish, but im so tired of seeing girly whiny little boys who are raised on tv , with no parenting .

im also sure it has to do with the germophobe fanatics. i mean ,seriously , how can you learn to use a knife if you are washing and sanitizing everything in sight.

my son who is scheduled for emergence this april, will do what i did as a kid. go play outside . if hes anything like me , he'll be covered in dirt , scrapes , and sweat from digging holes, playing in tje mud , and learning that the sun is your friend .
i already have his first knife set aside . its just a little pocket folder, but its the same one my mom got me for my first.

oh, and a lot of parents think their kids learn everything at school, and they are off the hook.

ps, i believe in spanking

And besides, he's busy trying to make sure he doesn't get a run in his pantyhose.

Yeah, whatever- that is a ridiculous statement in otherwise cognizant post. If we want to generalize, most of the guys I know who are into knives tend to be seriously overweight and would be in far worse trouble if "society collapses."

As to the original poster; many gun guys are not knife guys and vice versa. Heck, I didn't "discover" knives until a couple years ago, and I've been a gun user for about a decade.

Really? Knives and guns almost go hand in hand, and sometimes flashlights...

i dont think thats accurate... i think knife and non knife people alike have an obesity problem in the united states.

i know i spend hours a day exercising, btw i know this is off topic but any of you guys gonna be a at the marine corp mud run this year? www.mudrun.com

Most North Americans are overweight(not me at 8% body fat though:)).
What does your comment have to do with the topic at hand? And can't you see that being overweight does NOT preclude being ready for various disasters?
For one thing, I'd starve to death LONG before those overweight people would.

i totally agree. i have noticed that my friends who 'just dont give a f***' about what other ppl think are knife guys. the men who are concerned with the opinions and feelings of ppl around them just arent interested in knives
