How can a guy not be a knife guy???

I know Gun people who are really not into Knives. A Knife to them, is like owning a Screwdriver. You own it and us it, what is the big deal?

Most North Americans are overweight(not me at 8% body fat though:)).
What does your comment have to do with the topic at hand?

Noted- my comment was far off-topic, I admit, and was more a knee-jerk reaction to the silly defense of knife collecting as protection against the collapse of society (well, that's a not a entirely accurate, but it's what I got from the poster).

I started a separate thread expanding on my thoughts.

Being a knife guy/woman can be defined differently for different people. Some simply buy a knife to carry for security. Some buy for the job, or for hunting and fishing. Some buy for collecting. Many buy for it all. So it depends on how much you are into it. I carry, collect and use every single knife I own. I consider myself a knifeguy. A good friend of mine uses only for cleaning game. He is not. But his knives are all top shelf knives.

i didn't mean to say that knives will save you in a SHTf, but if you dont know basic survival skills (ie knife , or rock spear tip etc) , then you will be up the ol creek.

and i meant with the germophobe thing , that if you keep your kid in a hermetically sealed bubble , you're raising another helpless sheep.you really think those parents are going to give their precious sterile child a knife ?
just saying lots of kids and grownups are shelted unnecessarily.

and i know some gun guys think knives are just used for cutting bread and steak, i would venture a guess that half or so own pocket knives.

sorry if my posts seem inCOGNISSANT sometimes , im on a 2x4" pda screen.

not trying to ruffle , just trying to sort out my post.sorry if anything came off incoherent.

Isn't it in our DNA as guys that we're knife guys?? Regardless of culture or upraising, I think there's a primal gene in our biology that makes us want to own a knife, hold it, use it, admire it, and get more knives.

No, its not...otherise there would be lobby groups bigger than the gubment to help protect the rights of users worldwide.

Some just aren't dude...deal with it.

My son is 6'2" and ~210. He has never liked video games. He is an outdoor guy. Loves to surf. Loves to snow-board. And he likes women.

He doesn't have a thing for knives like his old man.

So that takes care of the DNA argument and the video-game syndrome argument and the gay argument.

We are left with Master of Fajitas comment

"Some guys aren't. Deal with it.
"

agreed.didn't mean that all non knife guys are video game addicts. and who said anything about gays?

A guy not being a "knife guy" I can understand. But a guy not carrying a pocketknife? That I don't get.

I agree that every guy should carry a knife. I would even go as far to say that every responsible person should carry. I think that a large reason why people don't is how they were raised.
My Dad has always carried a pocket knife and gave me one of his when I was a teenager. I can see how easy it would be for someone growing up without that influence to only see knives as being used in the kitchen or for harm. We learn so much from our parents that if knives aren't used in the house as tools, the utility of them may not be seen by that individual when they become an adult.

Generalizations are never good. I'm 150lbs 5'8". 22 pull ups with full kit, marathons, 4:30 mile time. So no, being a "knife guy" doesn't make you obese.
I like knives. I also like guns, lights, and anything that holds something related to the three. I'm a gear guy. And yeah, I like women.

Before I toss in my half cent worth, may I suggest we start keeping score. I'm not sure this othread is going to go away for a day or two.

While being PC has become rampet, could evolution be at work, as well? At one time a knife would have been essential to survival; now, not really. I was fortunate to have a father who tought me wood skills and to hunt and fish. I received my first knife when I was 8, and my first rifle at 10. By the time I served in the military during Nam, the Army updated me on other useful ways to use weapons.

Today, kids grow up in mega cities, many w/o a father or a role model. People who don't know any better fear and demonize knives, guns and other things they know nothing about, and make sure the kids do so as well. There's that pesky PC again. So much for philosophy; just be glad we have had the opportunities to learn what we have.
And, if you see a bulge in someone's tutu, don't assume they are glad to see you.

its because of feminism:thumbdn:

I'd say sometimes it's not so much that as urbanization... modern city-dwellin' guys consider a knife nothing more than something their ladies use in the kitchen to make his lazy highness' supper... assuming they know how to cook anything that wasn't in a can or ziploc bag. Folk in the information age get further removed from some very basic tools and skills. Sure, they can contact all their friends on the latest networking site using their latest portable digital gizmo, but lord help them if they have to open clamshell packaging! :D

Society has been brainwashed into believing the Gubmint will take care of every need, and that being self reliant and able to use basic hand tools is not needed.

+1:thumbup:...in a nutshell...yea

Don't worry, I'm sure Outdoor_guy is lacking in some other "guy" categories.

Does he have a truck? How could a guy not be a truck guy?
A dog? How could a guy not be a dog guy?
Guns? How could a guy not be a gun guy?
A shop full of tools? How could a guy not be a shop guy?
Sportscar? How could a guy not be a sportscar guy?
Motorcycle? How could a guy not be a motorcycle guy?
Lawn tractor?
Blond and brunette girlfriends?
Full beard?
Big screen TV?

This topic was ridiculous, meaning literally "worthy of ridicule."

Sorry, but thats bullshit

I would question that. When I took my concealed weapons class back in 2002, the instructor encouraged everyone in the class to carry a flashlight and a knife, in addition to whatever firearms you were intending to carry. He proceeded to show some good Surefire lights and knives from various of the top companies.
To me it was nothing new. At that time I was already well into lights and knives, just fixing to add a gun or two to my EDC.
The reason he stated for carrying a knife, on the weak side, BTW, is in case some loser gets ahold of your gun and is trying to get it out of the holster, you can use your weakside hand with the knife to slash up his wrists.
And for those who don't know, power does go out in the day time. I have been in some rather large windowless buildings in broad daylight when the power went out. Yes they had emergency backup, but it did not come on for several minutes after the power went down. A flashlight sure came in handy then. A few folks question why I always have a light on my left hip. That is what I tell them. You all are familiar with the quote, It's better to have it-------? Case closed, next case.
So to me, they all go hand in hand. And that includes a good multi-tool as well.

Wow, you literally described me perfectly.

100% Grade A man steak right here.

I am also a black belt master in 5 arts, ex-commando, part time body guard, I sky dive, and even take time to visit my grandama.

LOL! I suppose you have a boat too?
How could a guy not be a boat guy?

------------------------------

And if you went to a boat show, would you be surprised and alarmed that some of the guys there weren't sportscar guys?
