how can i buy a naked knife?

Yea the OP first two. I'm thinking a cold steel bushman will do the job for around 20$.

Another good suggestion that is inexpensive and functional (and seems to fit what the OP is looking for), but it is hard to tell what the OP is really looking for.

A good inexpensive pre-sharpened blade blank (not "skeletonized") is the Condor Kephart or Bushlore (both about $20), but again, not sure what the OP is looking for.

Fred Perrin has some different sized fixed blades without scales. They have holes predrilled for adding grips, but can also be used without. You can find them at many dealers, Blade HQ being one.

There many makers who make skeletonized blades, ESSE, Spyderco, Kabar, Buck, etc. I would suggest picking a large online retailer and do some browsing.

There seems to be continuing debate, and this isn't probably the time or place....but many claim that the stick tang shown above is a full tang (like the full tang at the top), just not a full exposed tang.

But that pedantry will, no doubt, just serve to confuse our new friend. :)

I think these days many people think of the full length exposed tang when they say “full tang.” In the past I heard full tang more generally to mean a tang that ran through the full length handle, which incidentally could be exposed.

I get the impression from the first two pics the OP posted that he is not looking for a knife blank, but rather a knife with a metal “one piece” handle. Skeletonized or hollow handle.

For "survival". ;)

Hollow handled knives like the one he posted are known as "survival knives." (In fact, Levine shows many of what he calls survival knives that are not hollow handled.) So it is a correct term that needs no quotes.

At no point did our new friend say what he intended to do with the knife.

Maybe you could expand on what your quotes and winking emoji were meant to imply. Maybe that could help us better suggest a knife for him.

Though...we are still not exactly sure what he is looking for...

Go troll someone else, I wasn't responding to you.
i'd like to buy a survival knife but without the grip

I added survival because the poster I was responding and quoting left it out. The wink was to that poster, not the original poster.

Great! Since the OP is new, maybe you could expand on the winking while we are waiting for him to clarify further what he is looking for?

I know if I was new and looking for information and eager to learn, like our new friend appears to be, especially when I was not fully up to speed with knife lingo, I would take winking some sort of inside joke, and would want to be "in" on it, just for more info.

Any info to share on it for our new member who clearly wants to be part of the community?

I did share my opinions in this thread. My winking was not a joke directed to the OP as you are trying to imply. Again, go troll someone else and not continue to try to derail this thread.

I realize that, it was a joke directed to Lapedog, and that is fine.

But, sharing why it was a joke may help the OP learn about things. He may be referring to a "survival style hollow handle knife," or he may be referring to a hollow handle knife he intends to use for "survival" purposes.

I am sure the "survival in joke" was about the latter, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But what I am pointing out is that, instead of just making a "winking" in joke past the OP, maybe it's an opportunity for you to share with our new friend why that is an in joke.

Maybe talk about the impracticality of those knives in a survival scenario, or talk about the illogic of the whole "knife for a survival" scenario. I happen to strongly agree with both those points, but I did not bring up the subject.

Seems to me we should be making every effort to help our new members out. To inform them.

So true. This place can be intimidating; I spent years just browsing.

True.

Since panoz wont do it, I will.

A anonymuser12 I don't know if this is what you are going for by "survival"...if it isn't, feel free to ignore me! :D

I feel the "survival knife for survival" concept is fantasy, though a very attractive fantasy that sucks me in quite often! Somehow we all want to have super cool do it all knife on us for when we are somehow teleported to a deserted island with nothing but a knife.

Hasn't happened to me yet! Still hoping! :)

In the end, it seems like always having something like a Leatherman, a woods/urban skills set, and a charged cell phone on you (And a 4-5 inch fixed blade and a folding saw for the woods!) are far more effective than any knife.

However sexy cool that knife is!

Maybe that saves you from buying a bad knife you never use because it's sexy looking.

Of course all of us have a ton of them. :D

Agree with all of the above.

To be brutally honest, the only person who can survive with only an invincible knife!!! in a survival situation!!!, in inclement weather!!!, by which I mean: cold!!! wet!!! windy!!! exposed!!! will be the same people who’d would survive with...

... no knife.

Pretty much everybody else dies. ;)

I believe astronaut John Glenn would make extended trips into the mountains with only a Victorinox Executive swiss army knife.

That may be myth.

Doesn't look like anyone mentioned these yet, but Rockler makes a bunch of knife making kits. They include the blank, already ground, along with pins and a sheath. They have fixed blade and folders. The steel is 440C, high chromium stainless. I don't know if you can trust your life to them or not. But if you're looking to make your own with no metal work involved these are ready to go. They've also got wood blanks for scales.

(Go to Rockler dot com and search for "knife kits".)

For that matter, you can make a Grohmann boat knife from a kit, too.

Maybe, but it's an accurate representation of ANY knife being a survival knife if you're truly having to just survive.

If your car is within a day's hike, is full of gas and has a charged battery then you're not in a survival situation. Your knife is just a tool and some will be better than others.

If, however, you find yourself in a Castaway type situation for an undetermined amount of time with no reasonable means of returning to civilization, then whatever knife you happen to have is definitely a survival knife and it's awesome! Hell, any wedge shaped piece of metal, glass, stone or ceramic is a survival knife at that point. Good luck.

Al that said, I do think on of the Cold Steel knives mentioned, like the Drop Forged Bowie or Drop Forged Survivalist I mentioned, or the Bushman @Minnesota Man mentioned, might be what the OP is looking for.

Any of those would be great fun to mess around with in the woods, but none will get you out of a "survival" situation in the woods better than a working GPS.

Final note and I will move on...many, many times people want a "good knife to practice survival." Wouldn't you want to practice survival with a bad knife or no knife?
