Ok, I see that several companies offer automatic knives, yet you can only buy them if you are EMT, Police, Military, etc. Yet they are legal to own in my state, and carry, as long as they are not concealed. Just curious as to how I would go about obtaining one for my own personal use.

Well, there's a federal law against taking auto's across state lines, unless you're one of the above. So, unless you can find one that's manufactured in your state, or you become one a member of the military, etc, you're pretty much out of luck. (Legally speaking, that is).

If you want one badly enough, there is a provision that allows people with only one arm to legally order them.

Honestly, with all the new tech in locks and opening systems, I can't see a good reason to carry an auto. Get an emerson wave - much quicker, and more safe as well. (Won't accidentally go off in your pocket).

You can't obtain one since they are highly illegal. Anyone answering this question will be considered your accomplice and treated accordingly.

Way to go, Ace. (Love the closed minded attitude.)

They're illegal on a state by state basis. In Utah, for example, they are illegal. In some states, they are not. What IS illegal is getting them across state lines - which moves you into federal territory.

For the text of the Federal Switchblade Act, look here. That site is a good starting place to look into knife laws. Other helpful sources include your local state, county, and city web sites. Don't forget - just because it's legal in your state doesn't mean it's legal in your county or city.

I highly suggest you read and comply with all local, state, and federal laws - ignorance isn't an excuse, and could leave you in the pokey.

Strider's response is pretty common around here when that subject comes up. He wasn't being close minded, just to the point.
Someone that is asking on how to do something that "might" be illegal is frowned upon.

I think your answer was perfect and concise and covered the matter well. Kudos!

Not only do laws vary from State to State, but you also have to deal with local ordinances. While your State may not have any specific law regarding the purchase or possession of an automatic knife, the City or Town you reside in may have a law which says it is illegal to carry one. I know of a knife dealer who got in deep s**t for selling autos to non-military personnel in the presence of a police officer no less!

If they're legal in your area, you should be able to find one at a local knife store.

Just thought i would reply, gee I don't know where to buy one. Altough I see alot of them on Bladeauction. Oh yeah there is a couple of online places like SKM, or knifeshop or I suppose if a person really wanted to pursue it you could always do a web search under switchblades. Or try Yahoo under they're groups section, it seems to me that there might be a switchblade group at Yahoo. Of course I am only THINKING OUT LOUD here. No gaurantees. Not that I would have any knowledge of such illegal activity's. JT

C.Mapp,
Do a web search for your State's Attorney General's office, they usually have a link to an online searchable State Law reference.
There, you can fully research the legality of owning an auto in your home state and if they are indeed legal, you should be able to acquire one from a Legal Dealer at a local Gun or Knife show.

If they're legal in his state - more power to him, no reason to threaten him with laws and conspiracies. If not, he'll figure it out and do the right thing. Here's to not getting too jaded to the same old questions.

I had totally forgotten about the laws dealing with transporting across state lines. That pretty much rules out mail order sales. Also, there are no gun stores within an hour of where I live, and the closest one requires me to pay $20 to go across the Ches Bay Bridge. It's not important that I own, and if I were to buy one, it would probably spend more time in the display case than in my pocket. One handers are just as fast, and as many have said, much safer and more importantly, LEGAL! Thanks for the info guys,(and girls if there were any that responded), probably kept me out of a lot of trouble.

I just wanted to commend extremefishin00 for his ability to read what was posted, and take the pertinent information from it, rather than viewing them as personal attacks. Bravo, and thanks for demonstrating the value of a properly thickened skin.

Some people buy knives sold by other forumites. Some trade knives with other forumites.

I bought a knife from another forumite who lives in my state.

Am not sure why your question. Kershaw, Timberline, and Meyerco all make knives that are regarded as legal, that have "assisted opening." Some find that this speeds the opening of a knife.

I have a CRKT M16-14, a knife with a flipper. The flipper enables very fast opening of the M16. The flipper also acts as a finger guard, so also provides safety.
