How can I make this work? (pics)

Hi guys - from time to time I make handles for ceramic sharpening rods from scraps of wood I have on hand. My customers seem to like them and I have sold a few and given away a few. Like these:

Now in my spare time I am trying to do the same thing with a short piece of bear bone, but since it is hollow, I need to put a brass plate on the back end. I made the plate, and soldered a brass pin on the back thinking that I would fill the cavity in the bone with something I could drill a hole in for the pin and then epoxy it all together. So far I've made a mess and not succeeded. Here's a pic:

Any ideas on how I can do this or how to fill the gap with something which will harden and into which I can drill a hole?

Thanks!

Marine epoxy with the appropriate filler material. if you can clamp it up tight and can keep the epoxy from running out when you put the rod in , you don't even need to drill a hole for the buttcap. just leave enough space at the butt and go back and pour some more epoxy and set the cap into it.

You could glue a 6-32 or so threaded rod into the cavity of the bone, and then attach the plate with a finial nut.

Bend a small hook in that brass rod that extends from brass plate into hollow of bone. Pack a bit in the hollow bone so the epoxy doesn't run thru when poured. With bone vertical, fill hollow space with epoxy, place brass plate on end of bone and let cure. As mentioned before, use a thickening agent (cab-o-sil, fine grinding dust) mixed with epoxy to thicken it.

This is a perfect job for Apoxy sculpt. It's a 2 part epoxy with the consistency of modeling clay. Really, really handy stuff for filling/building up. It cures very hard with pretty damn good adhesion though not quite the level of T-88 or other structural fluid epoxy. You can also wet your fingers and smooth it out when you sculpt, just like clay.

I agree with ken. Either make a j hook on the pin or put some notches in it and let the epoxy set up over night.
