How can we support the Tibetan people?

Vote Republican.

Weakness breeds contempt.
With Obama or Hillary, China and all the Terrorists know they can act with impunity.

 China doesn't seem to have any problem even without them.

Crazy old Republican men with their finger on the nuclear button will always bring fear and respect from tyrants.

Can you comprehend that?

A few of our Subs can defeat their whole country.
We don't need troops on the ground.
We need leadership with guts.
We need to keep our military the strongest in the world.
Peace through strength.

Don't forget that China is now building itself a long-range fleet, both subs and surface - so in the none too distant future they may become more overtly and directly involved in affairs outwith their immediate area.

All I have to say is that Bill Clinton was scarier than Bush as a military leader. With him, it was unclear how big the US military was, except that we had so much in reserve that we thought it was worth cutting back. Currently, everybody knows how over-stretched we are, and that makes us weak.

Anyway, how do we help the Tibetans, anyway?

In the news today..I don't understand this..why would Nepalese authorities be pro-China?

"In Nepal, authorities forced an American mountaineer with a "Free Tibet" banner in his bags off Mount Everest. Chinese climbers carrying the Olympic torch plan to ascend their side of the world's tallest peak in the early days of May.

The climber, who was identified by a guide company as William Brant Holland, was caught with the banner at Everest's base camp, said Nepalese Tourism Ministry officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media."

Hi Danny,

At a guess, Nepal may be pro-Chinese for the same reason that Mexico is pro-American. They're neighbors, and China's bigger.

It's still kind of sad to see this news. I've got to admit, I find myself wondering why they're going to bother taking an olympic torch up Everest. It's not like it's going to burn up there, and there's all that negative publicity they'll get if one of the torchbearers dies in the attempt, or even if a storm keeps them from reaching the top.

Sigh. Gotta love politics.

Nepal are squesed in between two giants, India and China and are dependent on both of them. For instance to reach the peak at Mt everest you have to cross both borders towards the top (Nepal/China). How much of a chance do you have when a giant starts to make demands? "- Do this, act like that!"

The most interesting thing now is that China has sealed of (or are going to) the area, no one is permitted over the altidude of 7500 meters. Just to keep protesters at bay. This has now ruined expeditions schedualed in the near future, and making many Nepalese working with climbing out of a job. These restrictions will ba valid from 1:st to the 10:th of May. Only members of the Chinese expedition are allowed.

Nepalese policemen will shoot pro-tibeten protestors trying to pass says Mod Raj Dotel, spokesman for the home ministry (Nepal). http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/04/20/nepal.torch.oly/index.html?eref=edition_asia

What we can do to support the Tibetans.. well thats for each person to decide, I`ll try to learn more about tibetan culture, a couple of days ago I listened to Mrs Takla that is responsible for Department for Information and International Relations, thats the exile goverments Foreign Minister that is. In a few weeks we will have a Tibet-Week...

What I know for sure is that we just cannot let Communist/Chinese culture spread with their economic tentacles. They are as bad or worse than the Soviets ever were. I mean look at this situation; one bad decision after another compounded by an ignorance of our abilities to see through their childish games.
Now they have Nepalese police threatening to kill protestors?
I hope some of our athletes have the moral courage to start dropping out in protest. How can any self-respecting American participate in these games?

Well, the elections are in and Nepal's MAOists have won. :(

Wish it wasn't true.

This is kinda just nonsense. First of all, "communist" China is arguably more capitalist than many First World countries around the globe. In some respects, even more than US. Secondly, if they are as bad or worse than the Soviets, you wouldn't know from the truly remarkable rise in prosperity Chinese people have encountered over the last twenty years. The type of change people under the old Soviet system never knew. Third, Nepal historically has no particular love for Tibet. It was only a hundred years ago when Nepalese Gurkhas were employed as merciless mercenaries by the British for reasons so weak, it's not clear they were even the reasons. Not to mention the Nepalese Sherpas, porters, and various hangers-on involved in the invasion. By comparison, the Chinese annexation of Tibet half a century later was downright tame.

It seems likely modern Nepal sees Tibet as a boil on the ass of Sino-Nepali relations.

If Communism is to concentrate power and neglecting human rights/freedom of speech. Yes then China is Communist. But few if any Communist leaders that I know of have denied themselves money or privalegies if they got the chance. China is a bit like Vietnam, have adopted their agenda so that making money isnt a wrong thing. As long as its the right people doing profit..

Tribes from both Nepal and Tibet have been at war earlier in history, lets not forget that Tibet was once quite influental and mighty. There are still ruins in Tibet of wars fought long ago, looks a bit like sand castles..

Anyway, Nepal as one poor country would of course want their citizen to have a better life. But with the Tibet issue causing disturbances in the relationships with China, Nepal cant make full use of its potential. A boycott or actions from China would worsen things even more, so the price is to support the Chinese version of Tibet, that the Tibetans are very happy to have been "liberated".

As a sidenote I cant understand why Dalai Lama always have to take the blame for the ones that wish to boycott the Olympics, he supports the Olympics, even bringing the torch through Tibet. I am glad that there will be negotiations between the exil-Tibetans and the Chinese goverment in a couple of days.
