How close is close enough on a custom order?

Whit, yours looks better than his old one. The leather washers and smaller guard give it better balance, IMHO. I don't think you'd have any trouble selling it to someone else. It's still close enough to his to be considered a copy.

Whit I might have something too, I'll check and if Rick's won't work maybe something I have will. We'll get it going one way or another. Do you have a deadline?

No real deadline. I was smart enough not to put my back against THAT wall too! Thanks for looking.

If you're in knifemaking as a business, give the customer back his knife and pass on the order. You'll be hard pressed to make any money on the copy unless you are charging a bunch for the knife.

Making a similiar knife (as you already did) and making a copy are two very different things.

My advice: cut it loose!

Too bad; yours is a fine knife. You might think about tweaking the blade on yours to be more to your liking before you try to sell it. You sounded like you weren't entirely happy with the profile or the clip, but tried to force it to resemble his knife.
If that is the case, take another look at this knife and make it what you think it should be before offering it for sale. You might be surprised.

You know I think that's pretty good advice. It didn't occur to me, but now that Kevin mentions it I'd sure think hard about what he said.

I agree Ryan
the way you ground the bevel will screw you up bad if you don't change that for one thing.
on repo's you have to be very flexible in the way you work to adjusting to the ways the original maker made his blade and made his handles
it's not an easy thing to do and get very close to copy another's talent..
of corse if you don't mind the exspeyance and an other posable refusal
go for it Buddie time at the grider is a good thing.. and I think what you come up with even if he doesn't like it, you'll move it..

 really,?, you think so? can I show you what I think is a copy, ? I could be way off base ..but there is a big contras in your thinking and mine.
and I'll leave it at that..I'm wondering?,,
is there a protocol to what should be the line from a likeness to a copy? if not, maybe there should be? jm2cent
