How close is too close for a compass

So I've got this really nice looking K&M matchcase with the compass in the cap and I have my PSK with a nato button compass. Is there a distance that is too close for them to be next to each other (touching, a couple inches, or further) that will affect the magnetization? They will both be sitting in a pouch in my glovebox.

I really don't know the answer to this but since all the manufactures ship them together in the I wouldn't think there would be a problem. I would bet that REI has cases of them and I have seen buttom compasses sold 12 to a bag.

Truth is I don't know for sure.

I ordered a few TRU NORDS and they all came in the same VERY small package. They all work and point north.

If you are really wondering, get a magnet and walk into WalMart and try it out on one of their cheap compasses. Take a reading, then place the magnet close to it and then see if it still reads the same as before after removing the magnet. Each time move the magnet closer to the compass. If it screws up the compass tell the "ASSOCIATE" their compass isn't pointing north and walk away, and report back to us.

No magic, and you will have your answer. If you want to test out the air bags on the car that carries the compasses, I can tell you how to do that to. ;)

I don't know this for sure, but I would think the only thing that could happen is that the polarity does a 180 degree switch, and if that is all that can happen, it would be easy enough to tell. I would like to know for sure, though. Hopefully, somebody can tell us.

Okay, I couldn't take it anymore.

I took my 50 pound magnet and stuck it on my brand new TRU NORD compass. I ran it all over the thing and when I pulled the magnet off, the compass pointed north.

I was actually looking forward to telling the WalMart "ASSOCIATE" that they ordered the wrong compass, and this one I was holding was for the SOUTHERN hemisphere, because it points south. I would have loved to see the deer in the headlight look when I said that to him. ;)
