how come no torx wrenches?

quick question...

how come spyderco doesn't supply us with a small torx wrench to use on the interchangable clip system (manix)? how are we supposed to move the clip to tipup/tipdown without a torx wrench? this issue is different than philips/flathead, as those are relatively standard and people can be expected to have them on hand. torx screws are different-- rarely do i meet someone who has a set, and rarely do i find a store that carries them. plus, isn't it impractical to have to buy a whole torx set just to use on this one knife?

if the manufacturer is concerned about people meddling with the knife where it shouldn't meddled, then spyderco should have stuck to using rivets (which were great IMO). proprietary screws are one thing if the manufacturer wants to be able to disassemble a knife but make it difficult for the general population; but this clip is made for us to be able to interchange, right? allen wrenches are reliable and considerably more standard than torx.

i hate torx, and i hate tip-up carry.

this is a fantastic knife though!

Home Depot carries them. I don't really think its impractical to buy the whole set either b/c it only cost 6 dollars. I like the torx b/c they don't strip on me like the old phillips style use to (on the Japanese models). I never could find a phillips that would fit in the Japanese models snug enough not to strip it.

 the Manix comes tip-down from the factory doesn't it? Or do you perfer to use the knife left handed?

I really don't think they are concerned about people meddling with it. If they were I think they would probably use a security plus torx (they can be bought to but they are harder to find than regular torx). I'm fond of rivets myself but I do like screw constrution on some models to.

Doesn't the Manix have phillips screws on the clip? No wait, that was the Lil' Temp....

That's like asking how come car manufacturers don't supply you with your own personal tool set to take your entire car apart.

Go buy a Husky 8 piece torx set for $6 at Home Depot...

no, because the clip is made to be removed and placed in different spots. your car isn't made to be taken apart. and for the parts that are meant to be serviced regularily, the manufacture does provide you with the tools, or makes the part accessable w/o tools (such as your gas cap, windshield wiper blade, every cap for fluids under your hood, plus the cover to your air filter is probably thumbscrews). pontiac has, in my opinion, gone to great lengths to make all user-accessable components tool-friendly or tool-free. my headlights, for example, have this elaborate (and crappy) latching system which unlocks and allows you to slide the light assembly in/out. your car probably comes with a jack and a tire iron, and those are tools used to change your tires, aren't they?

i already caved and went to home depot for torx heads. i couldn't find a set w/ heads small enough to fit the screws and ended up buying a big "precision, multibit, screwdriver set" for that one bit. it cost me 17.99.

it was a T9 screwhead, in case anyone was wondering.

My car is designed to be taken apart. The manufacturer has never supplied me with the tools to do so (even though GM started using Torx screws on some headlights decades ago).

No other knife manufacturer supplies the tools to disassemble their product (except John Greco - an Allen wrench). Home Depot does sell a small screw driver set with Torx bit for a lot less than $17.99, but now you own a really great set.

At least the only thing you found to complain about regarding the Manix was the lack of a free screwdriver to change the clip ;)

My CRKT M16 of old came with a torxdriver, extra screws and an extra clip as well.

I'm not saying Spyderco needs to include one, as they are easily found at any Sears hardware, Auto Zone, Home Depot, Lowes and any tool section in any store, really. I thought it was nice that my M16 came with all that, though.

For the topic poster, event though it's a bit late: You can find individual torxdrivers for sale at Sears hardware with the craftsman lifetime garantee for like $2.99. Keep that in mind when you go to adjust a pivot or take apart a knife that requires two of one kind of driver to do it.

don't forget CRK-- they supply an allen wrench. crkt also frequently supplies allen wrenches on their knives w/ interchangable scales/clips. i know the crkt lightfoot m1 came w/ tools. emerson knives states they specifically use phillips head hardware so that the knife will be user-servicable.

i mean i'm not dogging on spyderco here, the thing that's driving me crazy is they used to use phillips head hardware--an attribute i really appreciated at the time. my spyderco dragonfly (modded for a metal clip by spyderco) used a philipshead, as does the CF delica.

you're right, the screwdriver was the only thing. otherwise, this knife is absolutely perfect. rugged, ergonomic, quick, and 100% quality.

but if you really want me to complain some more, i've got another.

chamfered holes. i miss 'em.

Actually, I've had a heck of a time finding a T6 Torx bit. I looked everywhere around with no luck. I ended up finding one really crappy kit that had one in it.. but other then that I've been S.O.L.

 Those can be difficult to find. I got mine at Sears.

Maybe spyderco could release a spyderbox like Benchmade's Bluebox. (The new ones come with two T6, t8 and t10)

Odd. On my Manix all the torx screws on the knife are size T8.
Funny, on my Manix the blade and lockbar pivots are T9, the backstrap screws T8, and the clip screws are T6.

The torx heads are much better and common in computers today. They resist "abuse" much better than straight or philips head screws. With straight heads, you take the chance of scratching up your handles. Philips head screws all too often strip out.

I have a full set of torx (I work on computers) so I'm ready! You guys better get on down to Home Depot and catch up. So far I've read that the heads are T5, T6, T8, and T9 (in different messages here on the forums).

I have a Delica 4, Poliwog, and a Dodo. Got the Dodo at Sierra .. they raised the price to around $57 and black only (mine is blue and came today, UPS). May go ahead and order the black one. Well worth the price.

I needed one to change the clip on the ZDP deilica I just got and found the #6 torx at Sears for $1.99.

whoa, cool.

i bet this is like an artifact of the different "generations" of the manix.

mine is the 83mm manix, for clarification.

but all the screws are definately t9's.

i would think it's smarter for them to use a combination of t8 and t9 screws on opposing sides, don't you think?

because otherwise, you'd need two t9 heads to take out the screws--one to hold the bushing, and one to hold the screw. and that's exactly the issue i'm running into now--one of my screws is stuck (it's the one that the lockback bar pivots on). the pivot is also stuck. i need another t9 head. looks like i'm headed back to home depot. :(
